Seal Beach has quiet opening Monday; Los Angeles beaches will re-open Wednesday - OCRegister

Seal Beach surfer Marc Moore had an entire beach day planned out Monday, May 11, to mark the first day of his beloved beach opening back up.

“I’m going for the full beach experience,” he said on Monday, the first day people have been allowed back on the beach in the small coastal town in six weeks.

First, his plan was to run on the soft sand for a bit of exercise. After his daughters finish their online classes, they will hit the beach for a family surf session.

“They are dying to surf at their home beach,” he said. “My beautiful girlfriend, Holly, is so excited to play at the beach again she’s willing to let me give her surf lessons.”

The opening marked the last stretch of Orange County coastline to officially reopen; and like others, it has strict guidelines of active recreation only, meaning beachgoers must be exercising and not hanging out, laying around on towels.

Seal Beach officials said lifeguards were not only dealing with opening up again for the first time, but also an added swell that brought 4-foot waves and strong rip currents to their coastline. One surfer suffered a broken leg Monday.

“There’s plenty for us to do,” said Seal Beach Lifeguard Chief Joe Bailey.

There’s been some confusion and some beachgoers having trouble understanding the rules, but for the most part people were behaving, he said Monday morning.

“It looks like people are following the guidelines, we have surfers in the water and people are doing what they are supposed to be doing, it looks like,” he said.

“We have extra staff to remind people about social distancing and no sitting or laying out or tents on the beach,” he said. “We’re just trying to do the best we can and I’m sure my lifeguards will do a good job.”

Seal Beach’s sands are open only during daylight-only hours and will completely close again on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The City Council is set to meeting late Monday, though it’s unclear if they will decided on any changes to restrictions and beach hours.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles County beaches plan to reopen on Wednesday, also with active-use only and closed parking lots. The opening follows strict closures for the past six weeks.

A big swell that hit Sunday and Monday brought surf crowds to the ocean, with areas such as the Newport Beach jetties and the Huntington Beach Pier dotted with wave riders as 4-foot to 6-foot waves showed up.

The swell is expected to linger, but drop in size, through the week.
