Randall Hopley removed ankle monitor to avoid court date: Vancouver police - Global News

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

The search continues for high-risk sex offender Randall Hopley who is wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant after he walked away from his halfway house in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Saturday.

Hopley, 58, has previously been convicted of the abduction of a person under the age of 14, sex assault, assault and break-and-enters.

Vancouver police said he was likely worried about an upcoming court appearance on Monday and took “deliberate actions” to avoid it.

According to police, Hopley told several people that he was going to a nearby thrift store on the day of his disappearance but removed his ankle bracelet a short time later.

“There’s understandably a lot a concern, a lot of people in the community who have a lot of fear and anxiety over the fact that Hopley has again gone missing,” said Sgt. Steve Addison.

“It’s quite likely he’s laying low he’s hiding out, he doesn’t want to be found as a result of some anxiety he had about this upcoming court date. We’re doing everything we can, we’re working very closely with other law enforcement agencies and we’re gonna rely on the public with hopes someone will recognize him from the pictures that we’ve released”.

The 58-year-old made international headlines in September 2011 after he kidnapped a three-year-old boy from his home in Sparwood, triggering an Amber Alert and a Canada-wide search for the child.

Hopley returned the boy unharmed four days later and pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to six years, serving his full term until October 2018.

The Correctional Service of Canada has assessed Hopley as a high risk for violent and sexual re-offending.

Police said although Hopley has fully completed his sentence and has been released, he is bound by a 10-year long-term supervision order to help manage his risk factors.

Addison said Hopley was accused of violating his supervision orders earlier this year and had been released to a halfway house while awaiting the outcome of that case when he walked away.

Speaking from Halifax on Sunday, B.C. Premier David Eby says he is angry that Hopley was able to walk away from his halfway house and is expressing concern about the protections put in place.

“I’m certainly disturbed, like all British Columbians, to hear about the release of a sex offender who targets children. That he was insufficiently supervised and able to walk away from a halfway house. I don’t understand why there weren’t sufficient safeguards by the parole board to prevent this from happening,” Eby said.

“I think everybody with a four-year-old in their life is thinking about that child right now and the fact that this man is at large.”

Police say the 58-year-old could still be in Vancouver or a neighbouring municipality and the department’s high-risk offender team is among the units searching for him.

Hopley is described as five-foot-nine, 150 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He often has a beard.

Anyone who sees Hopley is asked to call 911.

3 Social Security Mistakes to Avoid Like the Plague in 2024 - The Motley Fool

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

Social Security plays a critical role in most people's retirement planning, so making sure you avoid critical mistakes is essential. A full 59% of retirees say Social Security is a major source of their retirement income, according to a Gallup poll. And that percentage has been increasing over the last few years. One small mistake could blow up your entire budget in retirement.

If you're currently collecting, or planning to claim Social Security in 2024, you'll need to be sure to avoid these three mistakes.

Older person looking at computer and scratching head.

1. Not knowing your actual monthly benefit amount

There are a lot of factors that go into determining how much you'll actually receive from the government each month. If you don't know exactly how much you'll receive in benefits every month, it's going to be difficult to plan the rest of your budget and retirement account withdrawals. There are four big factors to consider:

First, your Social Security benefit is determined by your Primary Insurance Amount and when you claim relative to your full retirement age (FRA). Your Primary Insurance Amount, or PIA, is based on your work history, and if you've stopped working at this point, it's a fixed amount. You can look up your PIA through the My Social Security portal.

You'll receive your PIA if you apply for Social Security at your full retirement age. If you claim before your FRA, you'll receive a smaller amount. Delay beyond your FRA, and you'll see a bigger check.

Those considering claiming in 2024 will be born between 1954 and 1962. 1954 birthdays reached FRA at age 66. But those born between 1955 and 1960 will have to wait an extra two months for each year they were born after 1954. Those born in 1960 and later won't reach FRA until 67.

If you're thinking of claiming at age 62 in 2024, you'll receive a check that's 30% below your PIA. Those claiming at age 70 in 2024 will receive a check that's 32% above their PIA.

Two checks from the United States Treasury.

The second factor affecting your monthly benefits check is Medicare Part B premiums. Most beneficiaries have their premium deducted directly from their benefits check every month. The monthly premium in 2024 is $174.70 for most retirees. That's an increase of $9.80 over last year.

The third factor affecting your monthly benefits check is the cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA. Every year, the Social Security Administration will increase your monthly benefits based on inflation. For 2024, current beneficiaries will see an increase in their monthly benefit of 3.2% (less the increased cost of Medicare).

Finally, you have to account for taxes. Some states tax Social Security benefits, but many don't. And the federal government will tax a portion of your benefits if your total income goes above a certain threshold. (More on that later.)

Underestimating or overestimating your Social Security check can be a big problem. It can affect how you manage your retirement accounts and investments, how you plan for taxes, and how much you plan to spend every month in retirement. Make sure you nail this number down in 2024.

2. Facing unexpected taxes

Your Social Security benefits can affect your taxes in more ways than one. Don't get surprised by an unexpectedly high tax bill.

The way the IRS taxes Social Security benefits relies on a metric called "combined income." This is the sum of your adjusted gross income, nontaxable interest income, and half your Social Security benefits. If your combined income exceeds a certain threshold, you'll owe taxes on a portion of your benefits. You can see that in the table below.

Taxable Amount Combined Income Range (Single) Combined Income Range (Joint)
0% <$25,000 <$32,000
Up to 50% $25,000 to $34,000 $32,000 to $44,000
Up to 85% >$34,000 >$44,000

Table source: Author. Data source: Social Security Administration.

Here's where it gets interesting. If you'd otherwise be on the cusp of one of those thresholds, you could face a sort of double taxation on some of your income.

For example, say you're a single filer collecting $20,000 per year in Social Security and you have a combined income of $35,000 in a typical year. If you need to withdraw an extra dollar from your retirement account, you'll actually get taxed on that dollar, and you'll pay tax on another $0.85 of Social Security benefits.

This phenomenon is called the Social Security "tax torpedo." Try to avoid it with careful tax planning. You may want to consult an expert for your personal situation.

3. Making too much while collecting Social Security

If you're still working while collecting Social Security, or you go back to work, you may find yourself subject to the Social Security earnings test.

The earnings test will reduce your monthly benefit check by $1 for every $2 of earned income you generate above a certain level. It applies to anyone who has yet to reach FRA. For 2024, the earnings test limit is $22,320. That limit is higher if you reach FRA in 2024 -- $59,520 -- and you'll only see a reduction of $1 per $3 over the limit.

If your benefit is reduced due to the earnings test, the Social Security Administration will recalculate your monthly benefit when you reach your FRA. It'll consider a month's worth of foregone benefits due to the earnings test as if you delayed claiming Social Security by an extra month.

While you'll eventually get what you're due from Social Security, you might be surprised to see the effect of the earnings test on your monthly benefits check while you're still working.

If you can avoid the above mistakes, you'll have a much easier time planning your budget and enjoying your retirement.

3D Printer Layer Shifting: How to Avoid it - Tom's Hardware

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com
3D printer layer shifting

Layer shifting is an issue where the layers of the 3D-printed object misalign or shift during the 3D printing process resulting in noticeable defects in your design. You may notice the upper layers are not correctly positioned on top of the lower ones, and the entire print might be tilted. In severe cases, you can even see cracks or splitting of the layers, especially when the print head collides with previous layers.

Several factors contribute to this issue, including mechanical issues within the printer, like loose screws and belts, to software problems like using a higher speed and acceleration settings in the slicer. Even if you are using one of the best 3D printers, if you don’t correctly set the various components of your 3D printer and slicer settings, it will cause issues during printing. But thankfully, fixing this issue isn’t hard, as we have explained below.

Properly Tighten the Screws and Belts

Screws hold all the components of your 3D printer in place, and the belts control the movement of the print head along the X and Y-axis. When the stepper motor turns, it drives the belt, and this causes the print head to move across the build platform horizontally.

It’s important to always check all the screws in your 3D printer and the belts to ensure you tighten them well because when loose, it will cause inaccurate movements and vibrations as the printer moves resulting in layer shifting. As you do so, be careful not to overtighten, especially the belts, as they will strain the motors and bearings.

In addition to properly tightening the screws and belts, you should also consider lubricating the extruder gears, bearings, rails, and other moving parts to ensure they operate smoothly with minimal friction preventing any uneven motion that might affect your print quality. As you do so, be careful not to overdo it, as it can attract dirt and debris, which can cause other issues.

You should also consider using a firm table that is sturdy and doesn’t wiggle during 3D printing. If your 3D printer has no rubber feet, you should consider adding them. For example, you can use glue to attach them to the corners of the base to absorb the vibrations. This can also help fix a noisy 3D printer. If you still face shifting because of vibrations, you can buy four clamps and use them to hold the sides of the printer to your table.

Calibrate Your 3D Printer Correctly.

When troubleshooting any 3D printing issue, the first thing most of us check is if the printer is calibrated correctly. That same applies to layer shifting. You need to check if all the components of your machine are set correctly to avoid issues. The first thing you need to consider is to level the 3D printer bed properly. An uneven or misaligned print bed will make the design not adhere properly to the bed, and you need to ensure that you do it right.

You can manually level the 3D printer bed or use the automatic feature if your 3D printer supports it. After leveling your 3D printer bed, the next thing you need to calibrate is the E-steps. You have to ensure that it deposits the right amount of filament during the printing process. If the nozzle extrudes less filament than required, the print will have gaps, or the layers might be weak and easier to shift. The filament that you are using should also be the one ideal for your nozzle to avoid jamming or clogging that can bring other issues that can lead to shifting of layers. You should ensure that you use the best 3D printer filaments as they have uniform diameter and are free of impurities.

Also, you need to check your 3D printer axis and calibrate it properly. You can print a small cube, measure each dimension, and use the values to fine-tune your axis. You also need to replace your 3D printer nozzle if it’s damaged, or you can simply clean it properly to avoid any debris from preventing the filament from extruding correctly.

Use Proper Speed and Temperature

If you print at a higher speed, it can result in excessive stress on the moving parts of your 3D printer resulting in vibrations and even making the screws and bolts loose. You also maintain a consistent speed as sudden changes, especially in sharp corners, can cause the layers to shift. Also, high speed can cause the pulleys to skip some teeth, resulting in layer problems and so you should keep a speed of about 50-60 mm/s.

Also, you should keep the travel speed to around 100 mm/s. Anything above that can bring issues. You can find travel speed settings in the Travel section of your slicer. If you have enabled combing, you should check the Avoid Printed Parts When Traveling.

In the speed settings, there are also Print Acceleration and jerk settings and in Cura you can find that the default value for acceleration is usually around 1000 mm/s.

The default value of jerk settings, on the other hand, is around 8 mm/s.

Both of these settings control how the print head moves and changes direction. If you use values higher than the default, it can result in layer shifting as it can result in vibrations and increased movements of the print head.

In addition to speed, ensure that temperature is consistent. If the bed temperature is not constant or set too low, for example, the first layer may not bond correctly to the surface and it will cause some sections to detach, which leads to misalignment of the subsequent layers, especially due to warping and curling of the base layers.

Enable Z Hop Feature

Z hop is a feature that instructs the printer to slightly lift the print head in the Z-axis as the printer moves between different sections of the print or when it moves to a new location. This vertical movement ensures that the print head doesn’t collide with any of the previous printed layers and this also prevents layer shifting. This feature is helpful, particularly when printing designs with tall or thin structures. You can enable this feature in any of the best 3D printer slicers.

The above methods should help you fix the layer-shifting problem. If it doesn’t, you should also check on your wires and the cooling fans and ensure they all work as expected. After adjusting your settings and checking the hardware, I recommend printing a layer shift torture text design before you start printing your design to see if everything is working as expected.

Georgia’s Kirby Smart has fun with Dabo Swinney’s ‘Tyler from Spartanburg' rant: 'Trying to avoid that' - Fox News

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney let a radio caller have it on Monday after "Tyler from Spartanburg" questioned Swinney’s salary amid a 4-4 start to the 2023 college football season.

On Friday, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart had some fun with Swinney's rant on his own weekly radio show as he prepared his team to face No. 12 Missouri in Week 10.

"And hoping that we get to enjoy some of those," Smart continued. "I’m hoping that we don’t have any questions from Tyler in Spartanburg. I’m trying to avoid that."

Smart was referencing Swinney’s five-minute rant on his Monday radio show that immediately went viral.

Two days after Clemson dropped to 4-4 after a loss to NC State, a caller got Swinney riled up.

"So, I’m curious. Why are we paying you $11.5 million to go 4-4?" the caller asked Swinney after questioning his coaching hires and saying he sensed "arrogance."

Swinney agreed to a new 10-year, $115 million contract in 2022 that runs through the 2031 college football season.

"You're part of the problem, to be honest with you," Swinney responded.

"The appreciation, the expectation is greater than the appreciation," he continued. "And that's the problem. We've won 12 10-plus-win seasons in a row. That's happened three times in 150 years. So if you want to know why, Clemson ain't sniff a national championship for 35 years. We've won two in seven years. And there's only two other teams that can say that – Georgia and Alabama. OK?

"Is this a bad year? Ya, and it’s my responsibility. Take 100% responsibility for it. But all this bullcrap you’re thinking and all these narratives you read. . . . Listen, man, you can have your opinion all you want. And you can apply for the job. And good luck to you."

The Tigers are 2-4 in ACC play and are in the middle of its worst season in over a decade.

Despite the down year, Clemson has had an incredible run under Swinney, winning double-digit games every year since 2011 and winning the national championship in 2016 and 2018.
