Kim Reily, a resident of Orleans, Massachusetts captured video of a shark eating a seal at Nauset Outer Beach in Orleans, around 8:30 p.m. on the Fourth of July, a Facebook video she posted shows.

The video begins with a woman crying, “Oh my God!” as blood-stained water gurgles to the surface of the ocean, clearly a sign of the shark’s attack.

“[It’s] like literally in front of us!” Reily says as she watches another body part being ripped and torn in the ocean.

“I would have cried. I know I know, [it’s] nature. But his poor little face,” Leah Baci, commented under the Facebook post.

Reily replied, “Oh I was totally crying...it was HORRIFIC to watch but couldn’t turn away!!! Slowest death ever I’m scarred for life...”

Morning and nighttime are when sharks take advantage of low light and reef turnover, according to Toby Daly-Engel, assistant professor of ocean engineering and marine sciences at the Florida Institute of Technology. This is because diurnal – animals that are active during the daytime – and nocturnal prey are out at the same time.

“but most shark attacks occur between 1 pm and 3 pm, when people are swimming,” professor Daly-Engel commented. “Beast to avoid any time you see a seal in the water and don’t swim by yourself.”

However, in Massachusetts, there have only been 17 shark attacks since 1751 when the first attack was recorded in Sandwich, according to WWLP.
