DELAND, Fla. – With the chase for the 2022 ASUN Championship at its height, the Kennesaw State softball team (18-26, 9-12 ASUN Conference) completed a series sweep of the Stetson Hatters (20-32, 9-12 ASUN) in a 5-3 win Sunday at Patricia Wilson Field.

Infielders Faith Alexander, Taylor Cates and Brinaya Bailey all posted multi-hit games for the offense, while starter Melanie Bennett (13-14) picked up her 13th win of the season and second in the series.

KSU got the bases loaded in the first inning after a leadoff single from Alexander followed by walks from Cates and Bailey. Outfielder Kiera Cooper grounded out to plate Alexander and get the Owls out to a 1-0 lead.

After Bennett retired the first nine Stetson hitters, the home team broke through with its first hit and first run of the game to even the score, 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

Cooper recorded another RBI in the top of the sixth, scoring Greep on a single through the left side. After a double play to close out the scoreless bottom half of the inning, KSU led 2-1.

Up by one run in the top of the seventh, the Owl offense posted its best inning of the afternoon, starting with a double from Alexander that plated Isabella Galloway. With Mary Greg and Anderson and Alexander in scoring position, Cates cleared the bases with a two-RBI single to give the Owls a 5-1 lead.

Stetson hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning but the Hatter rally ended there, sealing a 5-3 win for the Owls.

Bennett pitched all seven innings, allowing only five hits and two earned runs with eight strikeouts.
