JACKSON, MI – After a lengthy discussion and design process, the city of Jackson is getting a new seal

The Jackson City Council approved the new seal design by a 6-1 vote during its Tuesday, Nov. 9 meeting, with Council Member Laura Dwyer Schlecte casting the only dissenting vote.

The new design is circular, with text that reads “City of Jackson, Michigan Founded in 1829″ and shows a silhouette of the downtown Jackson skyline with the Grand River flowing at the bottom.

It replaces a seal that’s been used by the city since 1937 and references a statue in Washington, D.C. of the city’s namesake, U.S. President Andrew Jackson, waving his hat in the air while riding a rearing horse. After concerns were raised about racist ideology associated with the former president, the city tasked the Jackson Public Arts Commission to redesign the seal.

The arts commission worked with Weblinx, a Chicago-based graphic design company, to create the new seal, which city officials said is more specific to the Jackson community.

“Our city deserves a seal that directly references our own community,” Mayor Derek Dobies said. “I thank the Jackson Public Arts Commission for leading this effort and creating updated imagery that better represents how we feel about the city of Jackson in the 21st Century.”

Schlecte voted no, she said, because she thought the city should have used a different decision process to choose the new design, and because she said she would have liked to see a different design.

“What we’re using for our logo would be a better seal,” she said.

Currently, the city has been using a blue logo that represents the I-94 and U.S. 127 interchange. The city seal is different from the city’s logo, as it is used for official documents and for display at city facilities, officials said.

The new seal will replace images of the old seal in about “a dozen places,” including city hall, the Jackson Police Department and in parks, City Spokesman Aaron Dimick said, adding that approximately 200 patches for police officer uniforms also must be replaced, as they show the old seal.

The new seal is being phased in during the next year, City Manager Jonathan Greene said. An exact cost for this is currently unknown, but likely will be “thousands of dollars,” Dimick said. Funding for the change will come from the city’s general fund.
