Two Late Tallies Seal Win over Creighton - DePaul Blue Demons

CHICAGO - DePaul women's soccer used a pair of late scores to pick up a key conference win over Creighton on Thursday afternoon at Wish Field. Brooke Weitzel and Kristin Boos netted goals in the final 15 minutes to send the Blue Demons past the Bluejays by a 2-0 scoreline.

"I am proud of this team for staying the course and sticking to our gameplan," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "It was a game that didn't have a lot of dangerous chances for either team. To score two goals and get a shutout in a BIG EAST game is huge for us going into the game on Sunday against Providence."

Prior to the Blue Demons' pair of late goals, the matchup with Creighton was mostly uneventful. The Blue Demons generated most of the game's key offensive chances but neither side was able to put the finishing touches on chances. In the early going, both sides battled through cold temperatures and misty rain. The match seemed to lack energy and the Blue Demons and Bluejays fought for possession in the midfield. By halftime, DePaul had totaled four shots while Creighton attempted only two.

In the second half, the Blue Demons seemed to be on the verge of a breakthrough. In the 67th minute, Morgan Turner managed to find some free space in the attacking box, sending in a shot that was knocked away by the Bluejay keeper. The ensuing loose ball was chased down by Ebba Costow who's lunging shot was knocked away for a corner.

DePaul kept up the pressure on the offensive end and it paid off just over ten minutes later. DePaul midfielder Brooke Weitzel forced a turnover and quickly set up an open shot at the top of the box. Weitzel buried the shot into the right corner of the goal to give DePaul a 1-0 advantage with less than 15 minutes to play.

In the 84th minute, DePaul was able to add some insurance to the lead. On a corner kick service by Grace Phillpotts, Kristin Boos found space for a clean header. Boos knocked in a well-placed shot into the right side of the goal, past the Bluejay keeper.

DePaul preserved the 2-0 win until the final whistle, claiming three important points in the BIG EAST standings with two matches to play in the regular season.

KEY STATS

  • Weitzel's goal was her first of the season and the first in her career since a score in her first-career match: A 7-0 win over UMass Lowell back in 2018. Weitzel has started 11 matches in the DePaul midfield this season.
  • Boos scored her third goal of the season and second in conference action. Boos' three scores match a single-season career high: The Blue Demon forward scored three times in her debut season back in 2019
  • DePaul logged its sixth shutout of the season in the win. Mollie Eriksson has logged all six of the clean sheets in goal. The total is the most for the senior keeper since 2019.
  • DePaul improves to 5-3 at Wish Field this season and the Blue Demons have logged three of their four conference victories in Lincoln Park.

UP NEXT

With two matches to play, DePaul will host Providence for Senior Day at Wish Field on Sunday, Oct. 24. The match will begin at 1 p.m. and the contest will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports presented by SoFi.
