A crowd circles a Hawaiian monk seal that came to shore by Pu’u Keka’a (Black Rock) in Kaanapali on Saturday afternoon.

The seal rested for a few minutes on the beach before scooting back into the water and swimming down the Kaanapali Beach shoreline. Beachgoers said that they had sighted what they thought was the same seal further down the coast in the waters at Hanakao’o Beach Park earlier that day. A seal was later seen frequenting the waters at Baby Beach in Lahaina. Hawaiian Monk Seals are an endangered species, with an estimated 1,400 remaining in the state. To report monk seal sighting, injury, or stranding, call the NOAA Marine Wildlife hotline at (888)256-9840.
