2 designs being considered for new Jackson city seal - MLive.com

JACKSON, MI -- Jackson officials have released two design concepts that could replace the city’s current seal.

The city is moving to replace its current city seal — which depicts Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States — after concerns were raised about racist ideology associated with the former president. Jackson was a slaveholder and signed the Indian Removal Act of 1830, which led to mandated relocation of Native Americans along the Trail of Tears.

Andrew Jackson’s history raises questions about Jackson’s official city seal

The two new designs, released on Friday, Sept. 10, each feature a piece of the city’s history.

The first option shows a large oak tree and a railroad track. The oak tree is a nod to Under the Oaks, the Jackson location that’s the birthplace of the Republican Party, while the railroad track represents the city’s history as a railroad hub.

The second option features the city’s skyline and oak leaves.

The designs are being presented at the Sept. 14 Jackson City Council meeting for feedback from council members and the public.

The city council voted to start the redesign process in July 2020, after increased discussions on racial equity arose in the Jackson community after the death of George Floyd in May 2020 in Minneapolis, officials said.

City of Jackson seeks input for new design of the city seal

The current city seal design is based on a similar statue in Washington, D.C. and was adopted in 1937. Aside from being its namesake, the former president shares no connection with the city.

The city seal is currently used on official documents and for display around city hall. Since 2014, the city has moved away from using the seal in favor of a new logo and color scheme used for branding and promotional efforts, officials have said.

The city council meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, in the second floor City Council Chambers at Jackson City Hall, 161 W. Michigan Ave. The meeting will be broadcast on both the city’s Facebook page and on Comcast Cable Channel 21.

Residents can submit comments fewer than three minutes in length to the City Clerk’s Office at citizencomments@cityofjackson.org.
