A former Navy SEAL who shot Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden told Fox News on Friday that he could rescue Americans from Kabul with "nine guys" amid the Taliban takeover of the country.
Robert O'Neill discussed the situation in Afghanistan on Primetime with Will Cain and suggested that many U.S. admirals and generals should have resigned or been fired over recent events in the country.
O'Neill was a member of SEAL Team Six, which undertook the raid that killed bin Laden in 2011 in Abbottabad, Pakistan. He later claimed to have delivered the fatal blow to bin Laden himself, though this claim has proven controversial and has been disputed by another Navy SEAL who was involved.
O'Neill told Cain: "I'm a big believer in the acronym KISS: Keep it simple, stupid. And I was talking to another SEAL Team Six operator with whom I've served for 20 years. I'm just gonna call him Tiny."
"And Tiny told me the response: 'Here's how you get the Americans out. Tiny smash with hammer. And that's it,'" he said.
He went on to explain how he would go about rescuing Americans who are still in Kabul.
"Look, I don't want to be in charge, but if I was - oh I want to get the Americans? Cool. Give me nine guys. I'm gonna walk through the streets and I'm gonna kill everyone I see, and I'm gonna grab the Americans. It is not difficult," O'Neill said.
"But we have these people who are in charge that are a disgrace. I am amazed that there hasn't been at least 30 generals and admirals that haven't resigned or been fired today.
"But we won't because we have a commander-in-chief that was put there through whatever happened at four in the morning on election night. This is nonsense. It's insulting," he said.
That appears to be a reference to unfounded claims of irregularities in the 2020 presidential election.
"Everyone veteran, Marine, airman and navy SEAL ... coastguards ... everyone I've talked to today, all they tell me is they feel gross," O'Neill went on.
"And that's how you should feel. You should feel gross. We don't ask the Taliban permission. You know what we do? We kick their ass, that's it," he said.
O'Neill's claim to have killed bin Laden has been the subject of controversy due to Navy SEALs' code of silence that prevents them from publicly taking credit for their actions.
SEAL Team Six member Matt Bissonnette claimed in his book No Easy Day that O'Neill did not deliver the fatal shot. The U.S. government has never confirmed which individual killed bin Laden. A 2017 report from The Intercept claimed that O'Neill did shoot bin Laden but the Al-Qaeda leader may already have been dead.
President Joe Biden said on Friday that the U.S. government will evacuate Americans remaining in Afghanistan as well as U.S. Afghan allies who may now be in danger from the Taliban.
"We will get you home," the president said.
