Paradise Town Council approves new seal - Chico Enterprise-Record

The Paradise Town Council on Tuesday night approved a new town seal to replace the current one — which staff said is difficult to reproduce digitally,
especially on a large scale or for a high-definition use like television.

But the decision to choose one of three options was not done unanimously and took up to 23 minutes of the council time to discuss the issue, which ended in a 4-1 vote to adopt a new seal that uses Sawmill Peak as the major element within it.

However, the new seal will not include a daffodil, which recently was adopted as the town’s new flower, within it.

Councilman Steve Culleton argued that while the new seal wasn’t an immediate need and that the public should be given the opportunity to weigh in before the town made a decision.

“I would ask that staff go back to the community for their ideas, “he said. “We did it with our town flag, when we developed our town flag, we actually had a contest.”

He said that the whole point was to get the community more involved with its government. stressing that as the town rebuilds he wants them to be more involved in the process and the decision made.

“We have got to let the people drive this bus,” he said.

He noted that the designs that were presented to the council were the idea of one artist who donated his time, which Culleton said he appreciated but he felt that there were more talented people within Paradise that the town should give an opportunity to as well/.

While he acknowledged it at some point the seal needed to be changed, he didn’t see that it needs to be done right now.

And noted that with more time there could’ve been an opportunity to involve the town’s schoolchildren.

“This was done by one artist and a few staff members,” he said. And in a way that didn’t include the public’s input enough for him.

But the rest of the council didn’t see the need to spend more time on a seal given everything else going on with the town’s recovery from the Camp Fire

Councilor Rose Tryon said that liked the designs that were presented in fact her only concern with the new logo would be the colors within it. Noting that one government agency she worked for had a lot of white on the seal and that reflected at night.

“When we would go out in the moonlight,” she said. “The patches would reflect, and we would literally have to reach up and cover our patches.”

Vice Mayor Jody Jones said that she found the idea of a contest an intriguing one. But she said that she didn’t know if the seal was so important that they needed to spend a lot of time and effort on it and that the contest would require time and effort.

Councilor Greg Bolin also noted said that the seal was not a big issue for him he was happy with what the committee came up with.

“There are bigger fish to fry,” Bolin said. “I don’t have a real big rebuttal to it.”

Mayor Steve Crowder that he could live with keeping the old seal or approving a new one. He also didn’t want to see a lot of more staff time spent on the seal.
