ConVal seniors Henry Bernstein, Aria Frehner, David MacKay, Grace Phillips and Max Shumway are among the first students in New Hampshire to earn the prestigious Seal of Biliteracy. The seal is a national award presented to students who show a high level of proficiency in more than one language. The ConVal students who were recognized all earned their seals for their proficiency in German.

The seal demonstrates to prospective employers and colleges that students have a unique skill, and serves as an indicator that honorees are culturally competent.

“I am extremely proud of each of these students for the hard work and commitment they’ve shown to learning a second language,” ConVal German teacher Cindi Hodgdon said. “They are all incredibly deserving of this honor.”

The Seal of Biliteracy has been adopted by 42 states and Washington D.C., and is awarded by a school, district or state in recognition of students’ achievement in developing proficiency in two or more languages before their high school graduation. This year’s graduating class is the first to be eligible for the award in New Hampshire.

Californians Together developed the concept of the Seal of Biliteracy in 2008.
