BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District recognized nearly 100 seniors from Bridgewater-Raritan High School who achieved the annual Seal of Biliteracy.

According to the New Jersey Department of Education, students who achieve the Seal of Biliteracy "demonstrate that they are able to speak, read, listen and write in two or more languages at a high level of proficiency," including English.

“We’re extremely proud of these seniors,” said Maria Kostis, supervisor of World Languages & ESL for the district.

The biliteracy seal is earned by seniors who achieve certain scores on an exam, indicating their levels of proficiency. Testing was done at home virtually, with each student able to take their tests on their own time.

“They have demonstrated proficiency in all four areas,” said Kostis referring to listening, speaking, reading and writing for the modern languages.

She also said the company that handled the exams had done so in a way that ensured there was integrity in the taking of those exams.

The languages that students earned biliteracy in included Chinese, French, Italian, Latin, Spanish (including Castilian Spanish), Arabic and Portuguese. Five students actually earned biliteracy in two different world languages.
