GAME CAPSULE
Freshman Alexis Barroso delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give MSU a dramatic walkoff victory over Purdue on Sunday afternoon.

Michigan State allowed two first-inning runs to the visitors then shut down the Boilermakers for the remainder of the game.  MSU tied it up in the bottom of the third, when Mackenzie Meech picked up her second of three hits on the day and drove in the first run, and Barroso was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game at 2-2.

The pitchers were on point for the remainder of the contest – the Spartans stranded eight runners, and Purdue six on the day.  Alli Walker got the start and struck out four in three complete innings, and Ashley Miller shut the door on the Boilermaker offense for the remainder of the game.  Miller struck out five and allowed just three base hits.  Savanah Henley threw four innings of five-hit relief, striking out five and taking the hard-luck loss with the walkoff in the seventh.

MSU took the first and fourth games of the series, bookending the four-game set with victories.  Purdue falls to 10-22 with the Sunday loss.

Michigan State (9-16) heads to Bloomington for a four-game set with Indiana next weekend.

PLAYER HIGHS
  • Mackenzie Meech went 3-for-3 with an RBI.  She hit .462 on the weekend with a pair of sac hits.
  • Alexis Barroso delivered the game-winning double in the seventh, and had two RBI on the day.
  • Caitie Ladd was 2-for-4 on the day  with a double, and had nine base hits (two doubles) to hit .563 in the series.

STATS AND STORYLINES

  • Purdue got on the board in the top of the first, when Kaitlyn Brannstrom homered to right field to give the Boilers a 2-0 lead.
  • MSU rallied in the bottom of the third.  Joanna Bartz started it with reaching on an error, and Marissa Trivelpiece reached on a fielder's choice, moving pinch runner Abby Joseph to second.  Both Caitie Ladd and Mackenzie Meech followed with base hits, and Alexis Barroso was hit by a pitch to keep the bases loaded and tie the game at 2-2.  Savanah Henley came on to pitch for Purdue and got the next two outs to leave the bases loaded.
  • MSU went small ball again in the bottom of the fifth, as Marissa Trivelpiece and Caitie Ladd reached on back-to-back singles and Meech laid down a sac bunt to move them into scoring position.  Henley worked out of the jam, stranding both runners.
  • The Boilers threatened in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with a leadoff double and a pair of singles with just one out on the scoreboard. She got a heads-up play at the plate for the second out, and another at short to end the inning.
  • Kaeley Hallada worked a walk to lead off the seventh, and Miller got a ground-ball out and a strikeout looking to put a pair of outs on the scoreboard.  The Spartans chose to intentionally walk Rachel Becker (3-for-3 on the day), and Miller got a ground ball to short from Ryleigh Scott to end the inning.
  • Trivelpiece walked to lead off the seventh, and one out later Meech singled to left.  That brought Barroso to the plate to set up the game-winning double.
  • Alli Walker started the game and compiled five strikeouts against four hits in three complete innings and was responsible for the two early Purdue runs.  Ashley Miller finished the game, scattering three base hits and striking out four, walking two (one intentionally) to earn the win in the circle.
  • Senior Joanna Bartz was honored with her Senior Day in a pregame ceremony.  Bartz helped start that third-inning rally as she led off the frame by reaching on an error.
