St. Patricks Day Returns To Seal Beach, Restaurants Hope To Open - Patch.com

SEAL BEACH, — St. Patrick's Day is back on in Seal Beach this year after all bars and restaurants closed due to the pandemic one year ago. Still, things will look a bit different from the mega-Irish bashes of years past amid the pandemic.

California's public health guidance advises limiting mixing with people you don't live with as much as possible to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, according to the Seal Beach police department.

Still, the local restaurants and bars are planning on being open for the holiday.

Masks, social distancing, and sanitization are expected. If that doesn't sound like fun, you can always make your own green beer at home (see below for a recipe).

Although many St.Patrick's Day celebrations will be held virtually this year, it's important to designate a sober driver or stay at home for the night, Seal Beach Police said.

If you are celebrating St. Patrick's Day, remember to do so responsibly by having a plan to get home safely.

This St. Patrick's Day Seal Beach Police Department will have officers on patrol from 1 p.m.until 3 p.m. specifically looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Going out on St. Patrick's Day in Seal Beach will be different than the party days of years past, but local Irish eateries are planning on serving customers.

Clancy's in Seal Beach says they will be serving customers outdoors and expect the evening to be somewhat subdued.

If Orange County achieves the red tier in Gov. Newsom's 4 tiered Blueprint for a Safer Economy by March 17, it is possible that restaurants could be open inside at a limited capacity.

The Irisher By The Sea will also be open, either inside, outside, or both, depending on if things open up a bit, they say. Takeout is also always an option.

"We'll know on Tuesday (March 17) if we can reopen inside, at a limited capacity," they told Patch.

The same goes with O'Malley's on Main and Hennesy's Seal Beach. It is a far cry from last year when restaurants were closed altogether.

Seal Beach has multiple Irish pubs, making it a hub of activity for those who enjoy "the wearing o' the green" on St. Patrick's Day.

Seal Beach Police Chief Philip Gonshak discussed being safe rather than sorry if you choose to drink more than your share of green beer.

"If drinking is part of your plans, plan on designating a sober driver and find a safe way home," Gonshak says.

Though St. Patrick's Day was canceled due to the pandemic in 2020, in 2019, seven people were killed across California, and 116 others were injured in crashes caused by driving under the influence.

Not only does driving under the influence put yourself and others on the road at risk, but it also hurts financially; attorneys' fees, fines, court costs, insurance rate hikes and car repairs can reach $15,000 or more in California.

If you ever see a suspected drunk driver on the road, call 911.

Funding for this program is provided by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
