(Feb. 13, 2021) Marine Mammal Alliance Nantucket rescued an abandoned seal pup Tuesday night near the downtown waterfront.

According to a release from MMAN, the organization responded to a hotline call about the abandoned seal crossing the road on the corner of Washington and Francis streets around 7:30 p.m.

Responders Susan Rohrer and Burton Balkind arrived to meet local police. It was determined to be a gray seal pup that had been relocated earlier that afternoon from the corner of Easton and North Beach streets to the harbor near Brant Point. The pup found its way to the Francis Street beach, likely searching for its mother, as its white fur indicated it was young and presumed abandoned. Mothers will not return to pups in high-noise, human or boat-traffic areas.

The pup was highly stressed by its activity over the course of the day. Volunteer veterinarian Steve St. Pierre and stranding coordinator Jillian Lucchini conferred, deciding the best course of action was to kennel the pup overnight until it could be transported off-island to the National Marine Life Center in Buzzards Bay for care. This is the fourth Nantucket pup transferred since December.
