A former Navy SEAL from Ohio gloated about “breaching the Capitol” following last week’s deadly riot, new video shows.
The footage — posted on Facebook last Wednesday by 45-year-old Adam Newbold — shows the retired reserve SEAL special warfare operator saying he was “proud” of the siege by President Trump supporters, ABC News reported.
“There was destruction breaching the Capitol, our building, our house,” Newbold said on the clip, which has since been deleted. “And, um, to get in, you had to destroy doors and windows, uh, to get in.”
Newbold, a 24-year Navy veteran, then recalled the chaotic moments inside the Capitol as he traveled back to Lisbon, Ohio, according to the report.
“What did get destroyed, and they’re obviously trying to overcome now, again, maybe they just didn’t get the message,” Newbold rambled in the video. “Unfortunately, I’m hoping the message was strong enough. Unfortunately, maybe it wasn’t. I hate to see this escalate more.”
Newbold went on to say the riot would make for “stories to tell from generations upon generations,” hopefully leading to a “positive revolution,” ABC News reported.
“Hooyah!” he boasted.
Newbold told ABC News he’s been contacted by the FBI and that investigators have asked him for a second interview.
“I am cooperating with the FBI,” he said, adding that he felt remorseful for his actions at the Capitol but denied making entry to the building or assaulting police officers.
The military man admitted that the siege was “all taken too far” while asking for leniency.
“I would like to express to you just a cry for clemency, as you understand that my life now has been absolutely turned upside-down,” Newbold said. “I am not a terrorist. I am not a traitor.”
FBI and Department of Justice officials said Tuesday that a wide-ranging investigation was underway into the deadly riot, with more than 70 people charged thus far. That number is expected to grow into the hundreds, authorities said.
Newbold, meanwhile, appears to be the first veteran from the US special operations community to be identified as a participant in the Jan. 6 Capitol assault, according to the report.
The magnitude of the rioters’ actions became apparent to Newbold once he learned that Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt was fatally shot by a Capitol Police officer as well as the death of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick.
“It accomplished nothing,” Newbold said of the siege. “What the hell was it all for?”
