On Tuesday, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said the mob that stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 was “fed lies,” and was “provoked” by then-president Donald Trump and others into a violent and deadly rampage on the very seat of American democracy.

McConnell’s words, delivered on the Senate floor, were his strongest to date to directly implicate now former president Trump in the attack that disrupted and tried to prevent the certification of the Electoral College votes that elected Joe Biden as president.

But it wasn’t just those zealots and conspiracy theorists who rampaged through the Capitol who have believed lies about the U.S. presidential election being “stolen,” as claimed repeatedly by Trump.

More than 70 per cent of Republicans who responded to a YouGov poll said they agreed with Trump’s claims that he received more votes than Biden, even though Biden won more than seven million more votes than Trump.

Even a majority of well-educated Republicans with college degrees said they believed the election results were fraudulent.

As the deadly events of Jan. 6 show, lies threaten democracy. Biden referred to that.

“So now, on this hallowed ground where just a few days ago violence sought to shake the Capitol’s very foundation, we come together as one nation under God — indivisible — to carry out the peaceful transfer of power as we have for more than two centuries,” he said.

“Many centuries ago, St. Augustine — a saint of my church — wrote that a people was a multitude defined by the common objects of their love. . . . What are the common objects we as Americans love, that define us as Americans? I think we know. Opportunity, security, liberty, dignity, respect, honour, and yes, the truth,” he said.
