The Atlantic Shark Institute (ASI) has shared a video of a recent shark attack off New England waters.
"This video was taken this fall on the west end of Nantucket near the Bonito Bar," said ASI Director Jon Dodd.
"It shows a white shark attacking a seal in shallow water not far from shore," he added. "It’s a great example of a white shark predation and how quickly the surrounding waters can go from calm and tranquil to an explosion of activity.

"The growing seal population continues to attract white sharks to these areas as they wait for the seals to make the risky journey from the safety of the beaches, to the fishing grounds in search of food," said Dodd.
Shark Institute's Increased Monitoring in 2020
As GoLocal reported in October, the ASI announced that their acoustic Shark Array off of the Rhode Island coast detected two additional great white sharks:
ASI said detected a great white shark at Point Judith while also detecting another great white off of Block Island.
This is the first detection that the ASI has gotten from their acoustic receiver positioned in Point Judith and their seventh different great white detected during the 2020 research season. This is the largest number of great white sharks identified in a single season in this long-term study.
"The great white that was confirmed in Point Judith was a female and approximately 9 feet in length," said Dodd. “We’ve had reports of white sharks being spotted in that area over the last few years but this is the first confirmed detection using this technology."
The great white shark off of Block Island was detected on the SE corner of the island and was an 8’6” female. Both sharks were tagged in 2019 by Dr. Greg Skomal from the Massachusetts Department of Marine Fisheries off of Cape Cod.
