With the U.S. election here and the COVID-19 pandemic continuing with no end in sight, experts are warning people to take precautions before sharing or spreading disinformation.
The fight over disinformation and misinformation has been underway for years, requiring news organizations and online platforms to make special preparations leading up to the election, and even more work on the actual night and expected aftermath.
Recently, two Star reporters looked at two different aspects of the disinformation discussion. Alex McKeen recently reported on a U.S. State Department report that points a finger at the outsized role Canadians play in spreading disinformation. As well, Douglas Quan looked at how online platforms like Facebook and Twitter have been trying to fight disinformation, and what people can do to try to protect themselves from being duped.
