(WSIL) -- Firearm deer season begins Friday in Illinois.
This is the first firearm season of the fall with a second occurring the first weekend in December. Authorities remind hunters to be smart and be safe when out in the field.
Tree Stand Safety Awareness Foundation said tree stand accidents are the number one cause of injuries and deaths to hunters.
The TSSA Foundation said the best way to prevent injury is to always remove and inspect your equipment before using. They said 35 percent of falls are inspection related.
TSSA also recommends that hunters make sure that their harness is securely buckled 86 percent of fall victims weren't wearing one. Another recommendation, connect before leaving the ground because 99 percent of fall victims injured were not attached at the time of their accident.
"A couple other things I want to hit on is, when we get out there, make sure you using safety but good ethnics, I mean, when you get out there, respect the land. Take with you what you took in, also make sure you are respecting the animals, just because we have limits, doesn't mean you have to take that many just take what you can use," said Chris Johnson of the Illinois Department of National Resources.
Now the TSSA Foundation said the Lockdown Stand is the type of tree stand that causes hunters the most injury, with 31 percent of hunters incurring an injury.
