President Trump is vowing to reverse changes to the US Navy SEAL ethos statement that made it gender-neutral, just days after words like “man” and “brotherhood” were eliminated.
The changes, first reported Monday by American Military News, include “common man” to “common citizens” and “I am that man” to “I am that warrior,” in an effort to remove gender-specific references after former Defense Secretary Ash Carter opened up all military and combat roles to women in 2015.
“I will be overturning this ridiculous order immediately,” Trump tweeted Thursday.
A Navy spokesperson referred inquiries late Thursday to the White House, while chief Pentagon spokesperson Jonathan Hoffman did not return messages seeking comment, Politico reports. A White House spokesperson also declined to comment, the outlet reported.
Naval Special Warfare spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Stroup told American Military News the updates to the SEAL ethos and Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen creed were done to reflect changes in the law allowing women to serve in the commando groups.
“The changes do not in any way reflect lowering standards of entry, rather they ensure that all those who meet the requirements to train to become a SEAL or SWCC are represented in the ethos or creed they live out,” Stroup said. “This improves the posture of the NSW force by ensuring we draw from the greatest pool of talent available.”
As of Monday, no women had completed training to become a SEAL or Navy Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen, Stroup said.
