A Seal Beach police officer who was hit by a suspected drunken driver has been released from the hospital and was recovering at home, authorities said Monday, Oct. 12.
A spokesman for the Seal Beach Police Department said the officer was expected to make a full recovery. His injuries were the result of a Saturday afternoon incident that began with traffic stop.
At around 3:15 p.m. an officer pulled over a car in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Mariner Drive, police said. The officer was standing next his parked patrol car when a pickup truck slammed into it, knocking him down.
Shortly after the crash, the truck’s driver, Kenneth Jacob Lopez, 30, hit a wall and tried to run away but was arrested by the California Highway Patrol on suspicion of driving under the influence and felony hit-and-run, officials said.
Jail records show Lopez, a Huntington Beach resident, was being held without bail. He has an extensive criminal history, according to court records.
In October 2019, he pleaded guilty to buying or receiving a stolen vehicle or equipment with a prior felony conviction. A few months prior, he pleaded guilty to felony charges of getting drugs into a jail.
In recent years, he’s also had convictions for other drug charges, forgery and burglary.
