Just how Tennessee drew it up, right? The Vols recovered a fumbled punt with just over a minute left to seal a 31-27 win over South Carolina Saturday night at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, S.C.

Clinging to a four-point lead an unable to put the game away on offense, Paxton Brooks punted away to the Gamecocks, but the punt bounced off the back of the leg of Cam Smith, who was blocking a Tennessee player.

Vols freshman receiver Jimmy Holiday jumped on the loose ball to put the game on ice.

Jarrett Guarantano completed 19 of 31 passes for 259 yards and a touchdown in the win, adding 25 rushing yards and another score on five attempts.

Josh Palmer led the Vols in receiving, with six catches for 85 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Johnson had three catches for 73 yards and USC transfer Velus Jones Jr. caught five balls for 29 yards.

Ty Chandler led the way on the ground, with 13 rushes for 86 yards, while Eric Gray ran for 46 yards and a touchdown and added a 31 receiving yards.

Holiday didn’t make a reception in the game before recovering the game-clinching fumble.

Holiday was a dual-threat quarterback out of Madison Central High School in Madison, Miss., but started his freshman fall camp with the Vols at wide receiver. He has also taken quarterback reps during camp, according to offensive coordinator Jim Chaney. The 6-foot, 203-pound Holiday has elite speed, clocked at 4.38 seconds in the 40.

Tennessee led 21-7 early in the second half before South Carolina rallied to tie the game at 24-all with 10:48 left in the fourth quarter. The Vols went 75 yards in four plays to take a 31-24 lead just 73 seconds later.

Brandon Johnson jumpstarted the drive with a 33-yard reception, then it was a 32-yard touchdown reception for Josh Palmer on the very next play.

South Carolina started the game with an 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to take a 7-0 lead. Tennessee’s offense answered with a three-and-out, then the special teams unit botched a punt attempt. The Vols responded on defense with a three-and-out of their own, leading to a 90-yard touchdown drive, capped by a one-yard plunge over the goal line from Jarrett Guarantano. Henry To’o To’o returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to give Tennessee a 14-7 lead.

The Vols opened the second half with an eight-play, 74-yard touchdown drive to make it 21-7, but South Carolina went down the field just as fast. The Gamecocks made it 21-14 on another 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive.

After Brent Cimaglia missed a 46-yard field goal wide left, South Carolina went 71 yards in 10 plays to tie the game with 4:32 left in the third quarter.
