Add people using household ingredients in their skincare routine and there is even more confusion as to what to use.

One example of this is olive oil - the past year has seen more people include it in their regime, with ‘is olive oil good for your skin?’ clocking up over 7,000 searches on Google annually.
But is it actually good for your skin, or does it cause more damage? The bottom line is that yes, it can be beneficial, but only if you have a suitable skin type. Here we look at the pros and cons and how best to apply it to the skin.
Is olive oil good for your skin?
As we mentioned above, a lot of people swear by using olive oil. However, it is not suitable for everyone and it should never be used on the face - especially if you have particularly sensitive skin.
Founder of Seekology, Rebecca Saunders tells MattressOnline : “Many people do swear by using olive oil on the skin, and last year it seemed that every celebrity was endorsing its use. However, it can cause irritation for those with sensitive skin and I certainly wouldn’t recommend using it on the face.
“Instead, use a specialist facial oil. It’s still possible to find oils which are suitable for use on oily skin - that are natural and specifically designed for this purpose.”
Benefits of using olive oil
If your skin reacts well to olive oil, there are some advantages to incorporating it into your skincare routine.
Vitamins: Olive oil is rich in vitamins in A, D, K and E.
Antioxidant properties: Antioxidants can help fight off illnesses such as heart disease and cancer.
Moisturiser: Ingredients in olive oil help keep skin hydrated and smooth, once it’s not sensitive.
How to use olive oil on the skin
If you do decide you want to use olive oil on your skin rather than your salad, make sure to avoid the face area. Apply a few drops to damp skin, never dry, and massage in circular motions until it is sealed in. If you feel it is sticky on the skin, pat it with a clean, damp face cloth.
