(Update: adding video) Changing filters also can help -- and turning off AC fresh-air intakes

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- As poor air quality continues to hit Central Oregon, there seems to be no escape from the smoke.

From cracks in windows to small crevices in doors, smoke can easily find its way into your home. So, are some steps you can take to keep the smoke out.

Bradley Sanchez, the owner of Tri County Climate in Bend, told NewsChannel 21 on Friday that the easiest steps someone can take is making sure doors and windows are closed.

Sanchez added that you can also change your home's air filters.

“Just close everything up,” Sanchez said. “Change all your filters, seal up your vents on your foundation, anything that can bring air into the house from the outside.”

Sanchez said air conditioners cannot really mitigate smoke, but some units do have fresh air intakes, which can be turned off to limit the amount of outdoor air that flows into your house.

Another option, which Sanchez said does not work, is a humidifier.

"(A humidifier) is another way to help combat if it is really dusty, but it will not help with smoke," he said.
