Fall camp is off to a great start for the Tennessee Vols, which is a good sign for UT entering the third year of the Jeremy Pruitt era.
But if the Vols are going to have a successful 2020 season, there’s something they absolutely have to avoid in the coming weeks.
Hitting the dreaded “wall”.
The 2020 season will be different from anything we’ve ever seen in college football. From a 10 game conference only schedule to playing in front of limited capacity crowds, it’s all going to be much different than what we’re accustomed to seeing.
Something else that’s different is the timing of fall camp and the start of the season.
Tennessee has been practicing for nearly two weeks at this point, but they still have a full month to go before their season starts on September 26 against South Carolina.
The first weeks of fall camp are always exciting — especially this year when we weren’t sure if it was even going to happen.
But with the start of the season so far away, it will be very easy for the Vols to hit a wall and stop making progress. That’s something that must be avoided. Tennessee can’t afford to waste reps over the next several weeks. If the energy isn’t there during the final weeks of fall camp, then it likely won’t be a good start to the 2020 season.
And look, it won’t be easy. Pruitt and his staff are great motivators. But there’s no manual for how to handle this type of fall camp.
It’ll mean that Tennessee has to constantly switch things up during practices. Coaches will have to work extra hard to keep players engaged.
The Vols can get through the next couple of weeks without hitting a wall. But it’s going to take a conscious effort from everyone in the program to avoid it.
When Tennessee takes the field in Columbia against South Carolina, it won’t take long to see whether or not the Vols were successful in avoiding “the wall”.
