Gisborne residents were saddened by the discovery of an injured seal that had been hit by a vehicle near Pouawa beach.
On Friday, a member of the public rang the Department of Conservation about the injured seal on the side of the road.
“When we arrived, the seal had unfortunately died. It appeared to have been hit by a vehicle,” DoC biodiversity ranger Jamie Quirk said.
“This section of State Highway 35 is open to the sea and seals can access the roadway.
“There are NZTA signs in the area alerting people to the possible presence of seals.
“Seal numbers on the East Coast increase during winter and adverse weather conditions lead them to seek shelter on shore for a period of time, and the weather was somewhat inclement over the weekend. We're grateful to the member of the public who called this in.
“Anyone who sees injured wildlife like this should call our emergency hotline 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468).”
