The beach was in need of a major clean up.

While volunteers who usually come out ready to work in Seal Beach were stuck staying at home the past few months because of coronavirus concerns, the trash continued to flow down the San Gabriel River, sitting on the sand and stuck between rocks at the jetty.

But helpers came out armed with gloves, bags and face masks to help spruce up the area that borders Seal Beach and Long Beach.

The Save the Beach clean ups have been happening for two decades, rain or shine on the third Saturday of each month, except when coronavirus hit and put a halt to the popular project.

Waterways and urban runoff funnel debris from 52 inland cities into the San Gabriel River and then into the ocean. Since Save the Beach started hosting clean ups at this location, an estimated 150,000 volunteers have given a helping hand.
