Seal surprise: Fluffy pup awaits lucky locals as central Japan aquarium reopens - The Mainichi

ISE, Mie -- An aquarium in this central Japan city reopened to residents of Mie Prefecture from May 12 after shutting down to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, and some lucky customers may even get to see a fluffy newborn seal.

Ise Sea Paradise in the prefectural city of Ise is limiting the entrance of visitors and placing restrictions while operating following the relaxation of the prefectural government's request to close businesses. It is now open from 11 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m., with last admission at 2:30 p.m.

Visitors are required to make reservations ahead of time. Residents of Mie Prefecture can enter on a form linked from the top page of the aquarium's official website the number of guests in their party and the date and time they wish to enter. Visitors must show identification papers that prove their residency, such as a driver's license, health insurance card, utility bill or receipt, or other relevant documents.

A spotted seal was born at Ise Sea Paradise at 3:12 a.m. on May 3. The seal pup is currently living with its mother in a pool area. Because the pup is in the lactation period, visitors will need a little luck if they are to meet the baby animal.

A staff member said, "It's a period where we mostly take care of the baby seal backstage, so you will need a bit of luck to see him."

The male baby seal measures around 50 centimeters long and weighs some 10 kilograms. His white fur will fall out as early as the end of May when the lactation period ends. Images of the baby seal can be seen on Ise Sea Paradise's official YouTube channel and Instagram account.
