Physical distancing has successfully flattened the pandemic curve in Ottawa, but things could change quickly if members of the public stop taking public health advice, Ottawa epidemiologist Dr. Doug Manuel warned Friday.
Ottawa could face a second wave of COVID-19, peaking in September and October, if physical contacts increase by as little as 20 per cent in coming weeks, according to local models.

Speaking at Friday’s Ottawa Public Health media availability, Manuel said a second wave is not inevitable in Ottawa, but it will require “smart distancing” to continue in order to avoid it.
That could be a challenge as more businesses open, as some day camps open and people begin making more contact with others after months of hunkering at home. The City of Ottawa has yet to make an announcement about day camps, although Premier Doug Ford has said they can open.
“As we reopen, we are going to see pressure,” Manuel said. “We have to be smart. If not, all the models see a very pronounced increase in hospitalizations and cases.”
