Baby seal saved from drowning, thanks to N.J. nonprofit - NJ.com

A gray seal pup in Cape May was saved from drowning on Thursday, thanks to help from an employee and volunteer from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center.

The female seal was found wedged in a jetty with half her body buried in the sand between the rocks near the Cove Jetty on Beach Avenue in the late afternoon, according to a Facebook post from the center.

“It took some skillful maneuvering to dig her out and then pull her up,” the post said. A stranding technician and employee got her out within a matter of minutes, it said.

“She had no injuries, so we sent her back to sea!” the post added.

Bob Schoelkopf, the center’s founding director, said the seals are common during this time of year, and people probably haven’t noticed because they’re usually working. With more people at home and going to the beach for fresh air, they’re noticing them more.

“They come every year. It’s been going on forever,” he said.

The Marine Mammal Stranding Center is a nonprofit organization that was started in 1978 and is located in Brigantine.
