Poster being put up in the Shelter Cove area.

A big-eyed baby elephant seal in the Shelter Cove area is getting more close up attention than the North Coast Marine Mammal Center would like.

According to an email one resident received from the Center,

We are aware of the northern elephant seal pup. The seal has already been rehabilitated once, that is why he has a tag number on his head and rear flippers. These animals instinctually migrate to Alaska and back to their home twice a year. This is a normal occurrence for all northern elephant seal pups. It’s approximately four to six months old and just trying to make its way to Alaska where it’s instinct guides it to go. The more we can let it rest the more we can help it. Thank you for your concern for our marine mammals. Please stay back and do not interfere with it. We would like to keep it as wild as possible so it can survive on its own.

So, stay away and just smile knowing that he’s a little guy resting during a big journey.

If you’d like to help the Marine Mammal Center in their work, you can go their page and look for the donate button in the upper left corner.
