Mayor de Blasio doesn’t want New York City to implement an Italy-style shutdown because of coronavirus for fear that a total quarantine could crater the economy into 2021.
“We’ve got to see if there are things we can do short of that total shutdown model,” de Blasio said on 1010 WINS Thursday morning.
“I don’t think we want to end up like Italy unless we are absolutely sure there is no other choice,” he said as the city’s tally of coronavirus cases rose from 53 to 62 overnight.
The entire European nation is under quarantine as an estimated 10,000 people have the coronavirus.
De Blasio has hinted that Broadway may go dark, but he doesn’t want to shutter the city’s education system or mass transit.
“We do not want to see the subway system shut down or schools shut down unless it is absolutely necessary,” he said.
“Right now what were trying to do is balance the obviously health needs with everything else. People need to have a livelihood, kids need to be someplace safe during the day, people need to get around including to get to health care,” he said.
De Blasio said earlier Thursday on CNN that he is preparing historic measures to contain the potentially deadly virus in the nation’s largest city.
He has not yet released details on the plans but said on 1010 WINS, “What we want is fewer people in indoor settings.”
He expressed serious concerns about the economy.
“We do not want to see if we can avoid it a mass shutdown of all the elements of our economy,” de Blasio said.
“People won’t have money for rent, or for food, there’s a whole host of really, really negative outcomes we have to avoid and the possibility of dislocating our economy not just this year but into next year,” he said.
The mayor urged New Yorkers to prepare for the long haul.
“We will get to a point where we overcome this crisis and New York City will return to normal, but it will not be soon and people need to get used to it, “he said.
“We’re going to spend most of this year fighting this battle,” he added.
