AG: Tips to avoid common scams

Published 4:00 pm Wednesday, March 8, 2023

March 5-11 is National Consumer Protection Week. Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch said she wants to raise awareness about common scams, as well as share tips on how to avoid and report them.

“In the age of technology, there are many opportunities for scammers, including through gift cards or bitcoin, or on social media and dating apps,” Fitch said. “With tax season around the corner, there is even more opportunity for scammers to pose as government officials. It is important to familiarize yourself with the signs of a scam so you can identify it, avoid it and report it.”

Scammers often pose as government officials, banks or financial institutions asking for personal information or demanding payment by gift card, Fitch said.

“If this happens to you, hang up and don’t click on any links. Government agencies and financial institutions asking for personal information nor ask you to pay with a gift card or bitcoin,” she said. “If someone is telling you to pay with a gift card, it’s a scam.”

Identify, stop and report

• If you paid a scammer with a gift card, tell the company that issued the card right away and report it to law enforcement to help others avoid falling victim.

• A government agency or financial institution will never call you and ask for personal information. If you want to verify the legitimacy of a call, contact the agency or institution with contact information that you have or is publicly available. Do not use the information the caller or emailer provides.

• Be wary of anyone on social media or other online platforms requesting or offering money, loans, or grants. Even if it’s a friend, their account may be hacked.

• If you think you may be interacting with a scammer, block the account and report it to the platform.

• Never mix online dating with investment advice. If someone asks for money on an online dating app, it’s a scam.

• Never accept the help of someone who calls you and offers to help recover the losses in a scam “for a small fee.” Odds are it is the same scam artist coming back for more.

• Don’t share financial information over social media or any other unsecure site.

“Remember, don’t just avoid it, report it. Call law enforcement immediately if you have been victimized. This is your opportunity to stop these scammers and help someone else avoid falling victim,” Fitch said.

Advice about used cars and how to avoid becoming a victim

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- March 5-11 is National Consumer Protection Week. Action News has the top three consumer complaint categories and what to do to avoid becoming a victim.

Sarah Frasch is the chief of consumer protection for the Pennsylvania Attorney General. She says the top three complaint categories are cars, followed by home improvement contractors and real estate issues specifically landlord-tenant issues.

"Most of the complaints we get are about used cars," Frasch said. "The number one issue we see is about the cars breaking down shortly after the consumer takes the car home."

And some problems may not be visible to the naked eye, so before you buy a used car test drive the vehicle and have it inspected by a third-party mechanic you trust. It is your right under the law to take those steps.

The other thing is to make sure you understand the financing terms and all the details of the transaction, including fees for warranties and other items.

"Make sure you understand all of the terms of that contract and that you agree with it before you sign the contract," said Frasch.

Frasch also talked about the number of complaints the attorney general's office receives each year.

"Prior years, we were averaging anywhere from 25,000 to 28,000. Last year, we had a huge jump and we were in the 30,000s," she said.

Action News asked why the rise in numbers?

"I think a lot of it is you all sharing our stories and getting the word out how we're able to help," said Frasch.

Any consumer can file a complaint with the AG's office and it will try to mediate.

"And this past year, we were able to save consumers millions of dollars through that process."

The attorney general's hotline is 1-800-441-2555.

WWE: Cody Rhodes 'can't avoid' family feud with Roman Reigns - ClutchPoints

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

When Cody Rhodes made his way from RAW to SmackDown to have his first-ever face-to-face encounter with Roman Reigns since returning to WWE at WrestleMania 38, it felt like a big deal. Sure, Rhodes had spoken ad nauseum about the prospects of wrestling “The Tribal Chief” at WrestleMania 39 to pretty much any and every outlet that asked him to get on microphone, and his back-and-forth promo with Paul Heyman may just go down as the best talking segment of the year in WWE thus far, but this was different; Rhodes was finally going to get in the ring with Reigns, and whatever happened happened.

As it turns out, Rhodes and Reigns decided to spend their time largely talking about Dusty Rhodes, the patriarch of the Rhodes wrestling family who passed away from kidney failure in 2015. While the elder Rhodes obviously had a relationship with his son, it’s less common knowledge that “The American Dream” actually helped to train Reigns in developmental and was particularly proud of the main event-caliber star he became on the WWE main roster.

Discussing the prospects of bringing Dusty’s memory into his current feud with Reigns with WrestleBinge, Cody noted that while it wasn’t his idea, he accepts the connection and the value it brings to the feud.

“Can’t avoid it. Those nights when I make it clear that I’m not going to talk about Dusty at all is the night that the other guy talks about Dusty,” Rhodes said via Fightful. “Just recently, with Roman, I wasn’t really interested in the idea of ‘we’re going to converse on my father,’ but he has a very unique relationship, and had a very unique relationship with my father, so he’s the one that took it up there. I’m always hip and keen to the amount of emotion that happens with me on television. Everything everyone has been watching since I came back at the Royal Rumble is real. In an industry where there is a suspension of disbelief and areas of gray, this is the most real anything has ever been, trying to win a title that my family never got. The last opportunity we got for it was in the late 70s. It’s as real as it gets. Coming back from a very real injury, trying to make it to the Royal Rumble, surviving Gunther until I was able to eliminate him, very real. I like that. I prefer that. I have the responsibility, but also to a degree, the burden of the character that I play is myself. That’s what makes ‘finish the story’ sound even better. It’s a real story.”

Is it hard to believe that Rhodes didn’t want to talk about his father? Eh, maybe a little bit; Rhodes bringing up his father and family legacy is sort of his thing, with his theme music literally starting with the line “wrestling has more than one royal family.” Still, it’s nice to see how the story has come together, as to say there’s a lot riding on this match would be a severe understatement.

Cody Rhodes is happy fans consider him a WrestleMania Main Event talent.

Discussing the prospects of being in the main event of WrestleMania for the first time in his career with Sportskeeda, Rhodes noted that the value of the moment hasn’t been lost on him.

“The poster for WrestleMania came out the other day,” Rhodes said via Wrestling Inc. “Obviously, I’m a sentimental guy, but [it] really put a level of responsibility on me.”

“It’s great to hear someone say ‘he’s the right guy to face the guy, but for me personally, I have to go out and execute, I have to go out and deliver, it can’t just be a pipe dream, can’t just be hope. It has to be hope and execution… None of it matters unless you go out there and execute and give them something to love and cherish.”

Is Rhodes going to be the man who not only unseats Reigns as the face of WWE but also as the holder of the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship? Or does creative have something else in mind, maybe extending the story ever so slightly to have a guaranteed marquee main event at SummerSlam, say a No DQ match or a steel cage match to prevent The Bloodline from getting involved? Only time will tell, but after being stuck in the midcard in AEW, largely by his own doing, it’s pretty incredible to see Rhodes positioned as the top star in WWE.
