ATHOL — The Seal of Biliteracy is an award provided by state approved districts that recognizes high school graduates who attain high functional and academic levels of proficiency in English and a world language, in recognition of having studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.

The Department of Secondary and Elementary Education states that their vision is to help students recognize the value of their academic success and see the tangible benefits of being bilingual. The State Seal of Biliteracy takes the form of a seal that appears on the transcript or diploma of a graduating senior and is statement of accomplishment for future employers or college admissions.

The Athol Royalston Regional School District promotes learning multiple languages as part of the curriculum and culture. Many families who reside in Athol are multicultural and speak their native language in addition to English. Students must take two years of a foreign language in order to meet their graduating requirements. They are encouraged to learn, speak, write and read the language.

This year’s graduating class is pleased to announce the two students who have earned the State Seal of Biliteracy: Jetzua Castillo Vargas and Nicky Silva Fletcha.

According to the Multilingual Family Newsletter that is published by ARRSD, “Jetzua has been brilliant on the ARRSD basketball courts where he has been an obvious leader and a very skilled team player. Jet has added empathy and a multicultural perspective to our schools.

“Nicky moved to AHS during his senior year, He is from a bilingual Spanish speaking home and reads six other languages. He is interested in studying forensics or perhaps becoming a multilingual therapist in the future.” Congratulations to both of these graduates.

Joanne Davidson is the newsletter developer for Athol Royalston Regional School District.
