Niskayuna working group to look at redesign of town seal – The Daily Gazette - The Daily Gazette

NISKAYUNA – The Niskayuna town historian and a town resident are looking to establish a working group to redesign the town seal following the discovery of inaccurate representations of indigenous people.

Town Historian Denis Brennan and 23-year Niskayuna resident Marie Bosman will present a resolution to the town to vote on in May to establish a working group that would look at creating a new town seal that better represents the past, present and future, Bosman said.

The current town seal was created in 1976, Brennan said.

The idea to discontinue use of the current seal and redesign a new one came about after Brennan discovered the seal incorrectly displayed a Native American person with five teepees in the background on the upper right side of the seal.

“First, in 1809 there were six, not five, nations in the Iroquois Confederation,” Brennan said in a proposal during the Economic Development, Historic Preservation and Environmental Conservation Committee meeting at the beginning of the month. “Second and certainly more significantly, as elementary students in Niskayuna’s schools are taught, the Iroquois lived in longhouses.”

The town was established in 1809. When the Dutch first arrived in the area it was already inhabited by the Mohawk (Iroquois) and Mohican (Algonquin).

The seal also has a Shaker farmer on it although Shakers were not prominent in the area

“Nineteenth-century maps of Niskayuna identify several farms as ‘Shaker,’ but those are farmlands owned by the Shaker Society and leased to non-Shaker farmers,” Brennan said in his proposal.

Brennan said Thursday he doesn’t believe the intent behind the 1976 seal was malicious, but it should be corrected. In the meantime, he said, the town should discontinue use of the seal, such as not ordering anything else with the seal on it.

Bosman, a Pineridge Court resident whose children both graduated from Niskayuna High School, became interested in the process about a year ago as she wanted to learn more about the town’s history. She said in speaking with people who are part of the Mohawk tribe, they didn’t find the seal racist, but that when these mistakes are found the community should fix them.

“As we realize these mistakes, let’s move forward and do better. As we learn more, let’s do better,” she said Friday.

Bosman said it’s not just about changing the seal but about bringing more awareness of the town’s history.

She and Brennan both said they’d like to gather community input into what the next town seal might look like and how it can represent the values and ideas of the community.

Supervisor Jaime Puccioni said she finds their efforts to “understand and correct historical errors compelling.”

“I look forward to reviewing the results of their work with my fellow Town Board members,” she said.

Part of the working group’s tasks will also include a cost analysis of replacing the seal on items around town, including town vehicles.

England hold off France to seal fourth straight Six Nations crown - Reuters

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

April 30 (Reuters) - England claimed their fourth successive Women's Six Nations title with a hard-fought 24-12 victory over France in the Grand Slam decider in front of a sell-out partisan crowd at the Stade Jean Dauger in Bayonne on Saturday.

The visitors arrived in the Basque Country having won their four previous matches by margins of 50 points or more and capped an impressive campaign with their 23rd win in a row and their 10th straight victory over France.

England initially found themselves in unchartered territory as France got an early score but the hosts' bright start soon turned into a long afternoon as the Red Roses hit back in brilliant fashion with three of their own.

Les Blues were held at bay by the physicality and defensive work of Simon Middleton's side, who were relentless for much of the half and carried their 14-point lead into the break.

England's maul was key to them continuing their relentless attack while France's line-out inconsistencies halted theirs as Zoe Aldcroft's four steals in the first half was the difference between the two sides.

Fly-half Zoe Harrison was sent to the sin-bin early in the second half but England got through the 10-minute period without conceding a point and added three through Emily Scarratt's penalty after French centre Maelle Filopon was yellow-carded.

Annick Hayraud's side had sprung into life after going down to 14, however, and all their pressure finally amounted to some points as Annaelle Deshaye powered over the line just after the hour mark but Caroline Drouin missed the conversion.

The try gave the home side some hope but it proved too lateas England held on and stamped out any sign of attacking sparks from France, who last beat them in Grenoble in the 2018 tournament en route to lifting the trophy.

The result further underlined England's dominance in the sport and confirmed their status as favourites for the World Cup in New Zealand later this year - where they will be in the same pool as France.

"It means so much every time we get to have a Grand Slam. Some players weren't in the squad for this match and this is for every person who has played during this Six Nations," said stand-in captain Scarratt, filling in for the injured Sarah Hunter.

"In the first half we were in control, but you never have it all your own way against a top team like France. Our forwards were phenomenal and got through so much work. There's always something to work on, but tonight is a night for celebration."

This year's edition of the tournament returned to its traditional format of a six-team round-robin group after COVID-enforced changes meant England and France clashed in the 2021 final as winners of two three-team groups.

Earlier on Saturday, Italy snatched a 10-8 victory over Wales in Cardiff in the final minute through Michela Sillari's penalty but the hosts finished in third place - their best effort since 2009.

Ireland and Scotland will face off in Belfast later in the day.

Minnesota Pitchers Seal Road Victory Powered by DenHartog Homer - GopherSports.com

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - A Natalie DenHartog three-run home run in the third inning was all the offense needed for the Golden Gophers softball pitching staff in a 3-2 win at No. 22 Michigan Friday night from Alumni Field.

Minnesota (22-20-1 overall, 7-9 B1G) pitchers Emily Leavitt and Autumn Pease shut down the nationally-ranked Wolverines allowing two runs and struck out five. Lauren Espalin went 3-for-4 at the plate totaling as many hits as the entire Michigan lineup Friday.

Espalin opened the game with a sharp single to right and a one-out walk by Chloe Evans threatened for Minnesota before the home side closed the frame scoreless. The Wolverines got a walk to begin the bottom half of the inning and a misplay on a sacrifice bunt put two on with no outs. After both moved into scoring position, Michigan got an unearned run when a ball that appeared to foul off the batter's foot was called fair for a 1-0 advantage.

The Gophers turned the tide in the third posting back-to-back singles to start the inning as Espalin ripped a hit to center before Ellee Jensen dropped down a perfect bunt. With one out, DenHartog battled and saw a pitch to her liking that she crushed to right field for a three-run blast, her 16th home run of the season, pushing the visitors to a 3-1 lead.

Michigan quickly looked to respond in the bottom of the third, but an inning-ending double play from the Gophers defense put a stop to that idea. Kayla Chavez charged a grounder and had a quick throw to Sydney Strelow, who fired to Megan Dray at first to end the frame.

The pitchers from both sides took over from that point as just one base runner reached for each team over the next two innings, including a hit-by-pitch from DenHartog as she led the sixth getting beaned. The senior swiped second and was left in scoring position as Minnesota held on to its 3-1 edge. Pease entered the circle for the Gophers in the bottom of the sixth and got two quick outs until the next two Wolverines batters reached on free passes. A RBI single pulled the home side within one, but Pease delivered a perfect pitch for strike three ending the frame with the potential tying run at second base.

Espalin posted her third hit of the night, a two-out single in the seventh, as Minnesota looked to tack on insurance runs late. Michigan escaped the inning scoreless before Pease and the Gophers defense closed out the road win, 3-2, needing only eight pitches during the final frame as the senior picked up the save. Leavitt allowed just one unearned run on two hits across five innings and struck out three earning her second-straight victory.

Former Navy SEAL Damian Jackson enters transfer portal; Chris Walker also moves on - Lincoln Journal Star

Life in the Red Podcast: A couple of big portal decisions coming up for Husker targets plus hoops — and a farewell

Steven M. Sipple, Parker Gabriel and Chris Basnett break down impending decisions from Nebraska football transfer portal targets, plus hoops and Baylor Scheierman.

Damian Jackson has opted to continue his collegiate football career elsewhere.

A senior outside linebacker, Jackson entered the transfer portal Friday, a source confirmed.

The Las Vegas native served four years as a member of the Navy SEALs before walking on at Nebraska in 2018. Although he didn't play football in high school, he made his way onto the field for the Huskers from 2018 to 2021 as both a defensive lineman and outside linebacker while also excelling on special teams.

A coveted wideout in Nebraska's class of 2021, Neville enters transfer portal to reset career

Jackson has said he wants to take football as far it goes, and then he'll look at his options. Returning to the military is one of them, he said.

He has said his pursuit of a football career was tough. But Nebraska walk-on coordinator Kenny Wilhite and then-NU coach Mike Riley took a chance on him in 2018.

"Every single coach that I came into contact with at Nebraska has built me up," Jackson said last November. "When I came here, I didn't know anything about football at all, I didn't understand plays, didn't understand anything that was going on, and they stuck with me."

The 6-foot-2, 270-pound Jackson — a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree — played in 11 games last season, totaling four tackles. He finished with one solo tackle in the opener at Illinois and one assisted tackle against Fordham. He tied his career high with two tackles against Northwestern while adding the first quarterback hurry of his career. He recorded another hurry late in the season at Wisconsin.

Jackson was awarded the 2021 Armed Forces Merit Award, presented annually to an individual and/or a group with a military background and/or involvement that has an impact within the realm of college football.

Nebraska coach Scott Frost elected to place Jackson on scholarship for the 2020 season. After making a position switch from the defensive line to outside linebacker, he was a contributor on defense and special teams, playing in each of the final six games. He finished the year with five tackles, including a half tackle for loss.

He appeared in two games as a sophomore and one as a redshirt freshman.

Although he didn't play football in high school, he did participate in soccer and baseball, hitting .316 as a senior at Shadow Ridge High.

Meanwhile, senior defensive lineman Chris Walker, a member of Nebraska's 2017 scholarship class, also has entered the portal. The Lincoln East graduate provided depth along the line while also contributing on special teams. As a Spartan, he earned Super-State recognition.
