Search for former Navy SEAL continues in Yellowstone; autopsy finds his brother died of hypothermia - NBC News

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

As the search continues for a missing former Navy SEAL in Utah, an autopsy determined that his brother died of hypothermia while the two were on a trip at Yellowstone National Park, park officials said Tuesday.

Mark O'Neill, 67, of Chimacum, Washington, and Kim Crumbo, 74, of Ogden, Utah — both retired from the National Park Service — were reported missing by a family member on Sep. 19 after they failed to return from their four-night backcountry trip, the agency said.

"On Sunday, Sept. 19, park crews located a vacant campsite with gear on the south side of Shoshone Lake, as well as a canoe, paddle, PFD and other personal belongings on the east shore of the lake," the NPS said. Crews found the body of O'Neill the next morning.

Recovery efforts for Crumbo by foot and boat are expected to continue this week, with the help of sonar equipment, dog teams and a helicopter crew.

Crumbo, a former Navy SEAL, spent two decades working as a river ranger, park ranger and wilderness coordinator in Grand Canyon National Park, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. He was a member of the Potawatomi tribe and a board member of the Rewilding Institute, a conservation program, according to its website.

Crumbo was also a frequent contributor to The Salt Lake Tribune, which reported he was known for "writing letters to the editor about protecting wolves, wild horses and the environment."

The park service said the average year-round temperature at the lake is about 48 degrees Fahrenheit. Survival time is estimated to be only 20 to 30 minutes in water at that temperature.

iOS 15 Has An Annoying Apple Photos Bug — How You Can Avoid It - Screen Rant

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

iOS 15 is a solid all-around update, but unfortunately, a new bug with Apple Photos and the Messages app is causing headaches for some users. Just like the iPhone 13, iOS 15 has more to it than meets the eye. It looks virtually identical to iOS 14 on the surface — yet there are countless updates hiding just beneath it. Notifications are revamped, the Focus feature helps minimize distractions, FaceTime is better than ever, etc.

As great as iOS 15 is, the rollout for the update has been pretty bumpy. There was an issue with Apple Music not working on certain iPhones, audio for Instagram Stories was being inadvertently silenced, and the option to unlock an iPhone with the Apple Watch is busted. Major software updates are often plagued with bugs like this, and as it's quickly proven, iOS 15 is no exception to that rule.

Related: How To Set Up An iOS 15 Custom Focus To Concentrate On What Matters

In addition to the things mentioned above, it's now reported that there's yet another issue — specifically, some unexpected behavior with the Messages and Photos apps. Essentially, a quirk with iCloud's automatic backup process is causing photos to be deleted when they shouldn't. The issue stems from receiving a photo via the Messages app, saving it to the Photos app, and then deleting the message that the photo came from. Normally, this is fine. The message can be deleted to save storage space, the photo is safe in Apple/iCloud Photos, and all is well. Unfortunately, if that original message is deleted, the saved photo is wiped from the iPhone the next time an iCloud Backup is performed. MacRumors originally reported the bug, with other users on Twitter and Reddit further confirming its existence.

How To Avoid This Latest iOS 15 Bug

For people who regularly delete conversations/threads in the Messages app, this is obviously concerning. Even if someone doesn't manually delete messages, there's a good chance their iPhone is configured to automatically delete ones that are 30 days or a year old. Until an official patch is released, there are a couple of ways to avoid this bug — the easiest of which is not to delete any messages right now. If someone's dead set on deleting messages like normal, the other option is to temporarily disable the iCloud Backup feature. To do this, open the Settings app, tap your name at the top of the screen, tap 'iCloud,' tap 'iCloud Backup,' and tap the toggle at the top to disable it. It's important to remember to turn this back on once the bug is fixed, but pausing those backups should keep all photos where they should be.

Unfortunately, it's unclear when Apple will get around to fixing all of this. It's persistent with the iOS 15 version available to everyone right now, with Twitter user @superezfe claiming it's also present in iOS 15.1 beta 2. There's a good chance Apple will implement a fix once iOS 15.1 rolls out to the public, so here's to hoping that actually happens.

Importance of the State Seal of Biliteracy Program - Letters (CA Dept of Education) - Southern California Online Academy

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

Dear County and District Superintendents, Direct-Funded Charter School Administrators, and High School Principals:

The State Seal of Biliteracy (SSB) program, effective since January 1, 2012, recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing one or more languages in addition to English (California Education Code sections 51460–51464).

As the first state to implement an SSB program, California is a pioneer for multilingualism. Since California’s SSB program was established, 44 other states have adopted an SSB program, and every other state not currently offering an SSB program is in the process of developing one. Today, the SSB continues to be an important recognition for California high school graduates. The California Department of Education (CDE) collects SSB information using the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System, and local educational agencies (LEAs) may choose to use SSB data as one of their college and career indicators.

Since taking office on January 7, 2019, I have developed priority initiatives addressing statewide literacy and closing the opportunity gap. Recognizing biliteracy as an important part of the literacy initiative is vital because the home language skills that students bring to California schools are a valuable asset in their own right as well as in developing literacy in English. Similarly, closing the opportunity gap for English learner students requires schools to value and build upon the knowledge and skills English learners have in their home languages that can support the development of English proficiency. Recognizing these assets also helps English learner students feel that their language and culture is valued at school. Continuing to recognize the SSB as a tangible acknowledgement of biliteracy and as a way to celebrate California’s linguistic diversity is an important part of this work.

In order to set priorities for multilingualism, I reaffirmed the Global California 2030 Initiative, which sets goals to vastly expand the teaching and learning of world languages and the number of students proficient in more than one language over the next nine years. By 2030, one of the goals of this initiative is for the number of students who receive the SSB to reach 150,000. By 2040, the goal is for three out of four graduating seniors to earn the SSB. With over 72,000 graduating high school seniors earning the SSB in 2021, California is well on its way to achieving these goals. To continue to move toward these goals, California must build pathways to multilingualism starting in early childhood and continuing through high school graduation and beyond. To that end, the CDE is establishing a Biliteracy Pathway Recognition Program in the 2021–22 school year to provide guidance to LEAs seeking to recognize students who are on the path to biliteracy in preschool through eighth grade. This recognition is one way that LEAs can honor students who bring the asset of a home language, other than English, to the school community or who are enrolled in programs leading to biliteracy.

The passage of the California Education for a Global Economy (CA Ed.G.E.) Initiative, also known as Proposition 58, will also support California in achieving the goals of the Global California 2030 Initiative. The CA Ed.G.E. Initiative encourages schools and school districts to provide opportunities for all students to participate in multilingual programs. These expanded program opportunities will allow more California students to achieve biliteracy and earn the SSB.

Participation in the SSB program continues to be voluntary for LEAs; however, while fluency in more than one language has always been an admirable skill, biliteracy is increasingly important to employment in an international and global context to prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow.

To encourage participation in the SSB program and early preparation of students, consider disseminating SSB information to middle school and incoming high school students. Please share this information with your administrators, world language department chairs, and English learner program directors.

I am committed to honoring students meeting the demands of the SSB program. Further details about the SSB and qualification criteria may be accessed on the CDE State Seal of Biliteracy web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/el/er/sealofbiliteracy.asp.

If you have any questions about the SSB, please contact Gina Garcia-Smith, Education Programs Consultant, Multilingual Support Division, by phone at 916-319-0265 or by email at SEAL@cde.ca.gov.

Sincerely,

Tony Thurmond

Senate reaches deal to avoid government shutdown, Schumer announces - NBC News

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Wednesday that senators have reached a deal on a stopgap government funding measure to prevent a shutdown.

"We are ready to move forward," Schumer, D-N.Y., said on the Senate floor. "We have an agreement on ... the continuing resolution to prevent a government shutdown, and we should be voting on that tomorrow morning."

If the bill is not enacted, the federal government would face a shutdown after the calendar turns to Friday. The deal announced by Schumer would keep the government open through Dec. 3.

The House passed a government funding bill last week on a party-line vote of 220-211.

The Senate blocked the House bill in a procedural vote Monday. Republicans opposed the bill because it included an extension of the debt ceiling, which for political reasons they want to force Democrats to approve on their own.

The Senate's resolution does not include the debt limit increase. It does include, however, money to resettle Afghan refugees and disaster aid for victims of Hurricane Ida.

Another potential sticking point remains. Republican are pushing to include money for the Iron Dome, Israel's military defense system.

The funding was stripped out of the House bill because of opposition from progressives. The House passed a separate defense bill that included the Iron Dome money last week with overwhelming support, 420-9. But now, Republicans want the government funding bill to include Iron Dome, which could cause problems when it goes back to the House.

Julie Tsirkin reported from Washington and Dartunorro Clark from New York.

Sleep tips: 5 causes of restless sleep and how to avoid it - Starts at 60

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

Stress can cause quite a few physical and mental symptoms, including a restless night’s sleep. If you suffer from stress, it may be causing your muscles to tense up, making it harder to fall asleep. Equally, if something is on your mind, it may be harder to clear your head and allow your mind to drift off to slumber.

2. Imbalanced diet

Not getting enough nutrients in your diet can negatively impact your sleep schedule, as it plays a huge role in producing the sleep hormone melatonin.

3. Poor sleep schedule

Going to bed too early, late, or even when you aren’t tired can negatively impact your sleep schedule. For example, if you get into the habit of sleeping late, your body clock won’t know any different, even when you are tired.

4. Being overstimulated

Digital devices can cause overstimulation because the blue light can delay the release of melatonin, which ultimately resets the body’s internal clock to a much later time.

5. Underlying medical conditions

Some people suffer from sleep-related medical conditions, such as restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea, and insomnia. These chronic conditions negatively affect sleep by leaving sufferers tossing and turning during the night or simply leaving them wide awake all night.

How to avoid restless sleep?

With that said, there is still hope for restless sleepers. Here are five ways to improve your sleep:

Create a relaxing sleep space

Darken the room, light a candle, and choose quality bedding to help produce the best possible sleep space. Creating a relaxing space will rid your mind of stress and let you fall asleep quicker.

Set an alarm

Setting an alarm for the same time each day will help you form a regular sleep schedule. After a week, your body clock should get used to the time, leaving you feeling well-rested.

Turn off devices

As mentioned above, being overstimulated puts you at risk of a restless night’s sleep. Turning off your devices 30 minutes before sleeping will help your eyes adjust. Instead, you can choose to read a book to help you fall asleep.

Manage stress

Take a walk, journal, or practise relaxation techniques to help you manage stress. If you aren’t stressed, your brain won’t constantly be as active, meaning you can relax by the end of the day.

Prescription medications

If nothing else works, there’s always the option to seek professional help for prescription medications. Medications can help reduce sleep conditions, like sleep apnea.

What else can you do?

If restless sleep is persistent, it’s important to see a medical professional, so they can evaluate the causes and find the underlying issue.

What is Gazundering, and How Can You Avoid It? - Flux Magazine

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

words Al Woods

As a house seller in the UK, there are several pitfalls to avoid if you want to make it through successfully to completion, from property chain problems to noisy neighbours disrupting viewings.

In the past year, the housing market has experienced an unexpected boom due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a seller’s market with properties getting snapped up as soon as they hit the market, or even before.

But property industry experts are forecasting that the market will slow “dramatically” in the autumn. In a slow market, the buyer is king, and “gazundering” becomes a real risk for sellers. So what exactly is gazundering, and should you be worried about it?

Gazundering

What is Gazundering?

Gazundering is when a buyer lowers their offer just before the exchange of contracts. At this point, the seller is committed to the transaction and refusing the new offer is often difficult if not impossible — backing out of the sale could mean wasted time and money and potentially losing the dream house they want to buy.

Gazundering is not the same as the more commonly known “gazumping”. This is when the seller accepts an offer from one buyer then later rejects it when a subsequent bid comes in higher.

Gazumping is more common in a buoyant, sellers’ market. Gazundering is more of a risk in a slow buyers’ market when more properties are for sale than interested buyers wanting to purchase them.

Is Gazundering Illegal in the UK?

No. Buyers and sellers are legally entitled to change their minds about a property sale at any point before the exchange of contracts, which typically occurs around a week before a sale completes.

Why Does Gazundering Happen?

Gazundering can happen for many different reasons. It’s not always — or even often — a deliberate buyer’s ploy to knock down the sale price. Potential reasons why a buyer will reduce their offer last-minute include:

  • Unexpected survey results — if the survey shows a major problem that would cost a lot to correct, a buyer may want to renegotiate the sale price to account for this unexpected expense.
  • A change of heart — the buyer could get cold feet about making such a big financial commitment, especially if they’re first-time buyers or they’re upgrading significantly from a smaller, more affordable property.
  • Property chain problems — if your buyer is in a chain and problems have arisen that means they are out of pocket — perhaps they have been gazundered themselves? — they could try to claw back their losses by reducing their offer.

This is far from an exhaustive list, and gazundering can happen for a whole host of reasons. Whatever the reason, it can be both stressful and expensive for you as the seller so protecting yourself as much as possible against gazundering is a good idea.

Gazundering home

How Can I Avoid Gazundering?

When it comes to selling property, some things are out of your control. However, there are a few things you can do to reduce the chances of being gazundered.

  • Set a realistic asking price

The easiest and most effective way to avoid being gazundered is to value your house realistically. Setting a high asking price is more likely to result in negotiations further down the line when the buyer is no longer acting on emotions and impulse (which they may have been when they first made their offer).

  • Make sure the buyer is serious

Ask your estate agent to check that the buyer at least has an agreement in principle from a mortgage company (if they require financing to make the purchase) and that they are otherwise in a position to buy. For example, they have found a seller for their current home. It’s also a good idea to encourage a second viewing to ensure that the buyer really wants to purchase your home.

  • Don’t hide any problems with the property

If the roof leaks or you have an ongoing dispute with a neighbour, there’s little point trying to hide these issues from a potential buyer. They will discover the problems when a survey is conducted, during viewings or when they receive the property information questionnaires that every seller is asked to complete. Concealing something that may put a buyer off will increase the chances of the buyer dropping their offer at the last minute or pulling out of the sale altogether.

  • Choose a chain-free buyer

A buyer could reduce their offer on your home because they have been gazundered themselves. This won’t happen if you find a chain-free buyer to sell to. Of course, this can be easier said than done. If you want a guaranteed cash sale to a chain-free buyer, one option is to explore property buying companies

A genuine quick house sale company will have the funds to buy your property for cash in as little as seven days. There’s no risk of property chain problems or cold feet affecting the sale. It will mean a slightly below market value sale price, but you could save thousands in estate agents fees and wasted expenses if the sale falls through.

  • Compromise

Losing a house sale last minute can be expensive and stressful. Accepting a lower offer than you expected may feel like a bitter pill to swallow, but it could be the best compromise. If the price drop is due to issues arising from the survey, it may be worth considering paying for the repairs needed. This could save the sale and save you money in the long run. Any future buyer is likely to have the same concerns so you’ll probably end up getting the work done to sell it anyway.

Gazundering is typically more of a concern for sellers in a slow buyers’ market, but it can happen at any time. You can take some simple steps to reduce the risk, but be willing to accept compromise and explore alternative solutions if the worst happens. Starting again and finding a new buyer on the open market may not be the most cost-effective choice.

Divers ‘fight for their lives’ during relentless leopard seal attack - Yahoo Sports

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

Three spearfishermen are fortunate to be alive after a prolonged attack Sunday by a leopard seal in South Africa’s False Bay.

The harrowing ordeal – the seal disarmed the divers and bit them repeatedly – began over a reef more than 400 yards offshore.

According to the National Sea Rescue Institute, two of the men are Jiu Jitsu instructors and one is a Cape Town Municipal Lifeguard. Despite their superb conditioning, they barely prevailed in an exhausting “fight for their lives.”

Jerome Petersen, 50, of Stellenbosch; Joshua Joubert, 40, of Bloubergstrand, and Cameron Vannithing, 24, of Strand, were treated by NSRI and Cape Medical Response personnel after reaching the shore. Their injuries were serious but not life-threatening.

The NSRI, which issued a public safety warning on Tuesday, provided details of the attack in a news release:

“About 400 meters offshore, between Spaniard Rock and Caravan Reef, having reached a reef to begin spearfishing, Jerome dived to the sea bed when he was bitten on the leg by a seal that continued relentlessly biting and bumping the three spearfishermen while they desperately tried to get back to shore.

“The seal snapped and broke off their flippers, disarmed them of their spearguns and caused serious bites, puncture wounds and soft-tissue injuries, scrapes and bruising.

“They fought for over half-an-hour before finally reaching the shore exhausted and bewildered by what had transpired.

“They attribute their survival to years of experience with the sea and their high fitness levels and state-of-the-art equipment that they had with them,” the NSRI stated. “A 5-millimeter wetsuit arguably saved Jerome from fatal injuries.”

City of Cape Town authorities are monitoring pinniped activity and have warned ocean enthusiasts to be extra cautious.

Leopard seals inhabit Antarctic pack ice but can also be found in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania, and other Southern Hemisphere locations.

They’re large, powerful pinnipeds that hunt warm-blooded prey, including other seals. Attacks on humans are rare but have occurred.

According to the New Zealand Department of Conservation, at least one human fatality has been attributed to a leopard seal attack.

Studies show that Fragile X treatment can suffer resistance and suggest ways to avoid it - Floridanewstimes.com

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

Credit: Unsplash / CC0 public domain

Mark Bear, a professor of neuroscience at MIT, said 20 years ago that severe developmental brain damage (fragile X syndrome) could be treated with a neurotransmitter receptor-blocking drug called mGluR5. I remember the “moment of Eureka” that I noticed. The idea that mGluR5 stimulates excessive protein synthesis in fragile X neurons and disrupts their function has been tested in his laboratory and other laboratories around the world using several animal models of the disease. Well verified by.

“There was great hope that this would be a breakthrough treatment for the disease,” said Bear, a faculty member at the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory and the Faculty of Brain Cognitive Science. “Therefore, it was a serious disappointment when the first human clinical trials using the mGluR5 negative modulator showed no benefit.”

Bear admitted that this discovery cast many questions on the theory and usefulness of animal models. But now, a new study in mice, this is In the case of Fragile X Syndrome, I missed the mark because the brain builds resistance, or “tolerance.” Importantly, the study also points to several new treatment opportunities that may turn the tide for fragile X, the most common hereditary autism.

Bear and his team, led by postdoc David Stoppel, gave only a few doses early in life while the brain was still developing, and then no more doses as they grew older. We have shown that it can bring lasting benefits to cognitive abilities. This finding suggests that the timing and duration of mGluR5 inhibition is more important than previously recognized.

“Acquired development Taking medicine is nothing new, “said Bear, senior author of the new treatise. Psychiatry frontier.. “The fact that it happens does not therefore mean that you give up all hope. It means that you have to be aware of it.”

In addition to the strategy of administering an mGluR5 inhibitor at a young age and then discontinuing it, Bear said the study could benefit patients if the medication consisted of breaks to prevent the buildup of tolerance. It also suggests that there is sex. In addition, the study also suggests that fragile X mice resumed the synthesis of unknown symptomatic proteins in treatment resistance. Bear added that identifying and targeting the protein could also be a fertile new path for drug development.

These new findings follow the 2020 survey. Scientific translation medicine (STM) Bear’s lab and scientists at MIT and Harvard’s Broad Institute have developed compound BRD0705 that acts downstream of the molecular pathway between mGluR5 and protein synthesis. BRD0705 did not cause treatment resistance in mature fragile X mice.

Hard lesson

Fragile X syndrome is caused by mutations in which the repetition of nucleotide CGG negates the ability of the gene to make the protein FMRP. In the absence of FMRP, neurons exhibit hyperexcitability that leads to symptoms such as excessive protein synthesis, decreased circuit connections called synapses, and cognitive impairment. In the early 2000s, Bear’s lab realized that blocking the mGluR5 receptor in brain cells could prevent protein synthesis problems and treat many fragile X symptoms. After successful animal studies, treatment was attempted in clinical trials.

One of the participants in the drug Mabogluland trial was Andy Tranfaglia, Massachusetts. At the time of treatment eight years ago, he was 24, said Dr. Michael Tranfaglia, medical director of his father, the FRAXA Research Foundation, an organization working to find cures for disabilities.

“Andy responded almost miraculously to the drug, showing dramatic improvements in almost all areas of behavioral and cognitive function, but also significant improvement in motor function and lifelong severity. I have completely eliminated gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), “said Tranfalia. “Unfortunately, after 3-4 months, the effect of the treatment began to diminish and continued to diminish over time, although his reappearance of GERD was closely parallel to the recurrence of other symptoms. After 8 months, it showed some effect. At the end of the study, this strongly suggested the possibility of resistance to this treatment strategy. “

Certainly a journal study in 2005 Neuropharmacology A general test of mGluR5 inhibitors showed that a general test of mGluR5 inhibitors found a treatment-resistant effect in mature fragile X mice, whether voice tones lead to seizures, according to Dr. Tranfalia and researchers at Columbia University. rice field. But until recently, there wasn’t much evidence that patients had acquired treatment resistance, Bear said.

In a new study, Bear’s lab replicated the results of the 2005 study, showing that two other assays also show resistance to treatment. After the first dose of mGluR5 inhibitor, CTEP caused an improvement in nerve hyperexcitability in the visual cortex. Fragile X mice lost their benefits on chronic administration over the next few days. Fragile X mice also gave up their first progress after chronic dosing in suppressing protein synthesis in a region of the brain called the hippocampus, which is central to memory formation. Therefore, the results test the treatment resistance hypothesis by showing that it affects three different tests, including three different parts of the brain.

Routing around the resistor

“This study suggests answers to key questions from the failed X mGluR5 trial and the preclinical studies that influenced them,” Stoppel said. “We also focus on the types of experiments that need to be considered when developing other treatment strategies for Fragile X Syndrome and other neurodevelopmental disorders, although the definition of treatment resistance is first. The next goal is to uncover the mechanism and avoid it altogether. Once this work begins, there are some exciting preliminary hypotheses. “

Given the evidence that treatment resistance may increase, a more effective approach to maintaining the benefits of the drug may be to give the patient a break between doses to subside the resistance. The researchers said.

Experiments showing treatment resistance also yielded another important result. In each case, researchers were able to regain the benefits of the drug by adding a drug called CHX, which significantly suppresses protein synthesis. The findings suggest that fragile X mice resumed production of proteins that ameliorate the symptoms of the disease in resistance. Bear said an important next step in his lab was trying to identify the protein.

Do you want to treat it early and then stop?

The study also followed up another finding STM In 2019, Peter Kind’s lab at the University of Edinburgh discovered that administration of lovastatin appears to save rat memory formation and extinction without signs of treatment resistance. Looking at these results (Bear was a co-author), the MIT team focused on how the first dose was administered to 5-week-old young rats during the “critical period” of brain development. I did. Bear, Stoppel and their team speculated that the first dose probably produced a lasting effect in adulthood by better altering the trajectory of development.

In a new study, MIT scientists treated some vulnerable X mice with CTEP several times at 28 days of age (equivalent to about 10 years in humans) and left other vulnerable X mice untreated. I did. The team then performed a memory test when the mice were 60 days old, after no further treatment. In this test, rodents are supposed to first learn that an area is associated with a risk of mild electric shock, and then learn that risk. It was waning. Fragile X mice that were left untreated at a young age were difficult to test, but fragile X mice that were treated with CTEP at a young age were much more successful.

Bear said these findings were particularly important because they recreated the results of Kind’s work using different drugs of different species. Therefore, they are likely to generalize to the brains of other mammals, including humans.

In fact, a new clinical trial of an mGluR5 inhibitor created by the pharmaceutical company Novartis is underway in young children. Bear said the results of his new study made him feel more encouraged about the exam.

Divers 'fight for their lives' during relentless leopard seal attack - For The Win

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

ALSO ON FTW OUTDOORS: Grizzly bear charges within feet of trail-cam; ‘Look at those claws!’

MLB roundup: Cards win 17th straight, seal wild-card bid - Reuters

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

2021-09-29 07:05:18 GMT+00:00 - Adam Wainwright earned his 17th victory as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the visiting Milwaukee Brewers 6-2 on Tuesday night to clinch a berth in the National League wild-card game.

Wainwright (17-7) allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings and drove in a run as the Cardinals extended their team-record winning streak to 17 games. Nolan Arenado homered and drove in two runs while Dylan Carlson and Jose Rondon hit solo homers for the Cardinals.

Luis Urias hit a two-run home run for the Brewers, who lost for the sixth time in their past nine games.

Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina (shoulder stiffness) was a late scratch from the lineup, as was Brewers shortstop Willy Adames (left quadriceps tightness).

Giants 6, Diamondbacks 4

San Francisco took a step closer to a National League West title, using a four-run sixth inning to leave visiting Arizona behind for good.

Buster Posey and Evan Longoria each scored twice for San Francisco, which won its fourth straight game and lowered its magic number for winning the division to four. The Giants maintained a two-game edge on the second-place Los Angeles Dodgers.

Jake McCarthy homered and scored twice for Arizona.

Dodgers 2, Padres 1

Walker Buehler pitched seven shutout innings and Los Angeles continued its strong play down the stretch with a victory over visiting San Diego.

Trea Turner and AJ Pollock drove in runs as the Dodgers won for the 13th time in their past 16 games. Turner had three hits. Buehler (15-4) scattered three hits and two walks while striking out five.

Blake Treinen got his seventh save despite allowing a ninth-inning homer by Jake Cronenworth. Yu Darvish (8-11) took the loss after giving up two runs on five hits over four innings

Yankees 7, Blue Jays 2

Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run home run, Aaron Judge and Gio Urshela added solo shots and visiting New York defeated Toronto to pick up a crucial win in the American League wild-card race.

By taking the opener of a three-game series, the Yankees posted their seventh victory in a row and opened a two-game lead on the Boston Red Sox for the top wild card.

Stanton has homered in four straight contests, amassing 13 RBIs in those games.

Braves 2, Phillies 1

Charlie Morton threw seven shutout innings and Atlanta defeated visiting Philadelphia to reduce its magic number for clinching the National League East to three.

The Braves stretched their lead over the Phillies to 3 1/2 games. Atlanta could win its fourth straight division championship by sweeping the three-game series that began Tuesday.

Morton (14-6) allowed three hits, all singles and two walks while striking out 10. His 213 strikeouts this year are the most by an Atlanta pitcher in a season since Javier Vazquez fanned 238 in 2009.

Orioles 4, Red Sox 2

Ryan Mountcastle homered as part of a three-run sixth inning and Baltimore rallied past visiting Boston.

Hunter Renfroe had two of the Red Sox's three hits, including a home run. Kyle Schwarber also homered for Boston, which has lost four straight as it fights to stay in the wild-card race.

Pedro Severino had three hits, including an RBI single that gave the Orioles a 3-2 lead.

Mariners 4, A's 2

Mitch Haniger hit his 100th career homer as Seattle gained ground in the American League postseason chase with a victory against visiting Oakland.

Jake Fraley added a two-run double as the Mariners pulled within a half-game of Boston for the league's second and final wild-card berth. Seattle defeated the A's for the 11th consecutive time, a franchise record.

Chad Pinder homered for the A's, who are 3 1/2 games back in the wild-card race with four games to play.

Royals 6, Indians 4

Salvador Perez hit his major-league-leading 47th home run to help host Kansas City defeat Cleveland.

Perez, who went 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs, is now one home run shy of the Royals' season record, set by Jorge Soler in 2019. Andrew Benintendi added a two-run homer for Kansas City, and Nicky Lopez drove in the decisive run with a triple in the eighth inning. Franmil Reyes drove in two runs for Cleveland.

Royals starter Brady Singer yielded three runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning before leaving due to upper right arm discomfort.

White Sox 7, Reds 1

Luis Robert homered twice, Yoan Moncada and Gavin Sheets added solo shots and Reynaldo Lopez pitched six innings of one-run ball as host Chicago topped Cincinnati to eliminate the Reds from postseason contention.

Chicago, which clinched the American League Central division crown last week, won its third straight to snap the Reds' four-game winning streak.

The White Sox clinched the franchise's first 90-win season since the 2006 club went 90-72. The 2008 White Sox, who secured Chicago's most recent division crown before this season, won 89 games.

Astros 4, Rays 3

Jason Castro worked a bases-loaded walk with one out in the ninth inning and Houston rallied for a win over visiting Tampa Bay to snap a four-game losing skid.

After a 10-pitch walk by Chas McCormick forced home a run and tied the game, Castro won an eight-pitch confrontation with JT Chargois, who had entered after Josh Fleming (10-7) had loaded the bases.

Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve blasted home runs for the Astros, while Yandy Diaz and Randy Arozarena went deep for the Rays. Tampa Bay's Michael Wacha was exceptional, working five hitless innings while issuing two walks and recording six strikeouts.

Mets 5, Marlins 2 (Game 1)

Marcus Stroman tossed five solid innings and added his first career stolen base as New York edged visiting Miami in the opener of a doubleheader.

Francisco Lindor had an RBI single in the first inning and provided insurance with a two-run homer in the sixth for the Mets, who snapped a five-game losing streak and won for just the second time in 12 games.

Lewin Diaz hit a two-run homer in the fourth for the Marlins.

Mets 2, Marlins 1 (Game 2, 9 innings)

Noah Syndergaard made his first appearance in almost exactly two years for host New York, which earned a doubleheader sweep by edging Miami in extra innings.

Tied 1-1 in the ninth inning of the nightcap, automatic runner Javier Baez went to third on a leadoff groundout by Pete Alonso. James McCann followed with a nubber in front of the mound. With the speedy Baez racing for home, Anthony Bass (3-9) tried gloving it and tossing it home, but the ball glanced off his glove as Baez slid home.

The Mets played their 14th doubleheader -- the most for the franchise since the 1979 club played 15 twin bills. New York earned at least a split in each, going 17-11 overall. The Marlins have lost seven straight and nine of 11.

Pirates 8, Cubs 6

Colin Moran homered and drove in four runs to lift the host Pittsburgh past Chicago.

Bryan Reynolds had three hits and three runs for the Pirates. Hoy Park ripped a two-run triple in the sixth inning and scored on Michael Chavis' RBI single.

Nick Martini collected a career-high four hits and matched his career best with two RBIs for the Cubs, who have lost seven in a row. Chicago's Matt Duffy also drove in two runs.

Rockies 3, Nationals 1

Trevor Story homered and doubled and Elias Diaz also had two hits as Colorado beat Washington in Denver.

Kyle Freeland (7-8) took a shutout into the seventh inning before faltering. He gave up one run in 6 2/3 innings. Carlos Estevez pitched the ninth for his 10th save as the Rockies stopped a five-game losing streak, all of which came at home.

Ryan Zimmerman had two hits on his 37th birthday for the Nationals.

Twins 3, Tigers 2

Miguel Sano homered and Byron Buxton singled, walked, stole a base and scored a run as Minnesota edged Detroit in Minneapolis.

It was the 30th homer of the season for Sano, the second time in his career he has accomplished the feat. Sano joined Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew, Justin Morneau, Brian Dozier, Gary Gaetti, Tom Brunansky and Bob Allison as players with multiple 30-homer seasons in Twins history.

Caleb Thielbar (7-0), one of six Twins pitchers, picked up the win. Isaac Paredes and Eric Haase each had a double and two hits and Miguel Cabrera extended his hitting streak to five games with a sixth-inning single for the Tigers.

Rangers 5, Angels 2

Andy Ibanez had three hits and two RBIs to help Texas beat Los Angeles in Arlington, Texas.

Adolis Garcia also drove in two runs and made two stellar plays in right field, and Jonah Heim collected two hits and an RBI for the Rangers. Rookie A.J. Alexy (3-1) got the win after allowing two runs and three hits in five innings.

Max Stassi homered for the Angels, who are nine games under .500 for the first time this season.

Hawaiian Monk Seal Swims from Kure Atoll to Oʻahu - Big Island Now

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

Researchers expressed their amazement at one Hawaiian monk seal that swam 1,300 miles within a month.

According to the Department of Land and Natural Resources, the six-year-old female seal, designated as KG54, swam from Kure Atoll, the northernmost island in the Hawaiian chain, in Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, to O‘ahu, arriving on a north shore beach adjacent to Ka‘ena Point State Park Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2021.

KG54 rested on the deserted beach in the park, alongside RN58 (nicknamed Luana), a much fatter, eight-year-old female seal. (Courtesy of DLNR)

“We have data that shows at least 10 seals have made at least 14 different trips between the main Hawaiian Islands, the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, and Johnston Atoll between 1981-2011 and since then, there have been several more,” stated Dr. Michelle Barbieri, the Program Lead for NOAA’s Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program. “What’s impressive about KG54 is she made the trip in about a month, where other seals are more likely to make it over the course of several years.”

When Lesley Macpherson, an Interpretive Technician at Ka‘ena Point State Park, was first notified of a “new” seal, resting on a beach adjacent to the park, she went out to try and identify her. When she observed her, Macpherson spotted a gray-colored ID tag on the animal.

“Seals born in the main Hawaiian Islands have red tags, so it was exciting to realize she swam so far, so quickly, all by herself. It’s amazing, really amazing.”

ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD

On Saturday, KG54 rested on the deserted beach in the park, alongside RN58 (nicknamed Luana), a much fatter, eight-year-old female seal. Macpherson nicknamed the monk seal Huaka’i, which means traveler, journey, or path taken.

ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD

On Monday, Sept. 27, Macpherson reported a third seal resting on the beach, along with RN58 and KG54. Researchers also took notice of KG54’s size.

“We know she left Kure in mid-August, but we don’t know at this point her molt status,” said Barbieri.

Seals are typically lower weight after molting.

ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD

“It seems reasonable that she expended a lot of energy coming to O‘ahu. However, some seals from the NW Hawaiian Islands can be thinner than those born in the main islands, so it’s probably a combination of both factors,” Barbieri added.

She and others hope the seal refuels after her long journey before undertaking further travel.

Researchers don’t have a complete picture of monk seal movements around the islands. The experience of KG54 again demonstrates the ecological behaviors of seals.

”A 2015 study, looking back 30-years, shows seals mostly moving between neighboring islands and less often long distances,” stated Barbieri. “The ability of these animals to island-hop is what has allowed them to colonize new areas over time. Travel of up to 400-kilometers between islands is more common, unlike the one KG54 just made of 2,092-kilometers in fewer than five weeks.”

A different study verified the presence of monk seals in the Hawaiian archipelago for hundreds of years. Study author, Dr. Jack Kittinger wrote that though the prehistoric period remains poorly understood, findings suggest that monk seals were referenced in Hawaiian-language newspapers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. References are also made to monk seals in traditional knowledge forms and in familial histories.

Brian Neilson, the Administrator of the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) concluded, “The arrival of Huaka‘i demonstrates the ability of seals to move over long distances and to colonize islands that are separated by hundreds and thousands of miles. This, in part, explains how they have been able to slowly rebound from such small population numbers, once confined to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.”

Researchers know that endangered Hawaiian monk seals range broadly across the Hawaiian archipelago. Data shows that 10-14% of adult monk seals move from their birth island to other islands.

This special hospital has very special patients: Hawaii's endangered monk seals - Hawaii News Now

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - On the west side of the Big Island, a special hospital operates with one main goal ― take care of an endangered species.

“We are the only hospital permitted in all of the main Hawaiian islands to be able to care for monk seals,” said Sophie Whoriskey, the hospital’s conservation veterinarian.

The facility is called Ke Kai Ola. In Hawaiian it means “the healing sea.”

The Marine Mammal Center in California opened it in 2014 to take care of severely malnourished and sick or injured Hawaiian monk seals.

“They often have parasites, intestinal parasites, that are competing with any of the nutrients that they are able to get,” Whoriskey said.

Most of the seals needing care come from the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Their stay can be up to eight months.

The before and after comparisons are startling. Undersized seals fed a diet of restaurant quality fish reach their appropriate weight, and sick seals are nursed back to health.

Since it opened in 2014, 36 monk seals have been treated at the hospital and returned to the wild. The most recent is Eleu.

“We just released her a couple of weeks ago, healthy and happy. She’s gone back to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands where she hopefully will flourish and make lots of monk seal pups in the future,” Whoriskey said.

The hospital also has an educational component. Calls to the NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline at 1-888-256-9840 are answered by Ke Kai Ola’s response coordinator Lauren Van Heukelem and other response specialists.

She advises that if you spot a monk seal on the beach, keep your pets away from it and look at it using the rule of thumb.

“Put your thumb out to the side. If it covers the seal, you’re about 50 feet away, which is the recommended distance to be from a Hawaiian monk seal,” she said.

Seals that are treated at the hospital are named by a Hawaiian cultural adviser. The animals are housed in pools where they’re monitored through live video feeds to keep human contact to a minimum.

“It’s just a very quick into a pen if we need to provide food, and then we step out and away so they’re not interacting with us and getting used to our presence,” Whoriskey said.

Ke Kai Ola works closely with NOAA Fisheries and the Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program. Hospital stays for seals that come from Papahanaumokuakea can be up to eight months.

Whoriskey said every case is different and offers an opportunity to learn.

“We had an adult female that came in just last year who had a type of bacteria that caused her to have an abortion. We hadn’t seen that before in a monk seal,” she said.

There are about 1,400 monk seals in the Hawaiian archipelago. Ke Kai Ola is working to keep them healthy.

SEAL Team 1 honors its first commanding officer, who died in May - NavyTimes.com

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

Members of SEAL Team 1 gathered this month to commemorate and honor SEAL Team 1′s first commanding officer, Capt. David “Dave” Del Giudice, who died in May at age 88.

Del Guidice’s wife, sons and former roommate joined SEAL Team 1 at San Clemente Island Sept. 16 to visit the training areas where Navy SEALs are made and to exchange memories of the legendary leader.

“The Naval Special Warfare community lost a treasured teammate and one of SEAL Team’s consummate professionals with the passing of Dave Del Giudice,” said Rear Adm. H.W. Howard, commander of U.S. Naval Special Warfare Command, according to a Navy news release shortly his death. “He will be remembered as a quiet professional, one who shaped our history, upholding the tenants of our Ethos and serving as an inspiration to those he led.”

At the memorial service, four members of SEAL Team 1 spread Del Giudice’s ashes as they swam off the coast of San Clemente Island. They also gave his wife a folded U.S. flag, SEAL Trident and SEAL Team 1 command coin once they returned.

“Now that he has moved out to his final pick-up line for extract, we can say with confidence that his work on Earth is done; he’s run his race well, and his mission is complete,” Navy chaplain Lt. Cmdr. Stephen Griffin said during the memorial service, according to the news release.

Also present at the ceremony was Del Giudice’s friend, retired Lt. Cmdr. Timothy “Tad” A. Devine, who was roommates with Del Giudice during Underwater Demolition Team Replacement training in 1958.

After UDT/R training, Del Giudice was assigned to Underwater Demolition Team 12, where he served as the team’s platoon commander, officer in charge and executive officer, and deployed to Vietnam. While there, he was the assistant flotilla commander and worked with 10 other members of UDT 12 to supply the Laotian government with landing craft through the Mekong River.

This experience was crucial when then-Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Arleigh Burke authorized the establishment of SEAL teams in December 1961. He tapped Del Giudice as commanding officer of SEAL Team 1.

Del Giudice returned to Vietnam in January 1962, and was tasked with helping to train Vietnamese Coastal Force personnel in reconnaissance and guerilla warfare, and how to train future classes of the Biet Hai [Special Sea Force] commandos.

Altogether, Del Giudice served in the Navy for 24 years and assignments after his time as CO of SEAL Team 1 included serving as the budget sponsor for Naval Inshore Warfare Commands in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, and as the first operations officer for Naval Special Warfare Group 1′s predecessor, Naval Operations Support Group Pacific.

Del Guidice’s last assignment was as commanding officer of Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, California. He retired in 1978.

U.S. Special Operations Command, established in 1987, chose Del Giudice as a Commando Hall of Honor awardee in 2010.

Sugar hangovers: Why you feel bad after you eat sugar - CNET

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com
gettyimages-1285353362.jpg
Getty Images

Sugar is the black sheep of the health and wellness world. Whether you love it, avoid it like the plague or fall somewhere in between, sugar is one of the most hotly debated topics in health. A very real, yet perplexing situation, is what I call a sugar "hangover." No matter what you call it, feeling tired or dizzy after eating sugar can happen, but what does it mean exactly?

One minute you can be riding a sugar high, and the next you feel just plain gross. Sometimes it happens right away, or has a delayed effect (like if you eat one too many cookies at night and wake up the next day with a headache). While you may not get a full-fledged "hangover" every time you eat sugar, even feeling a little bit bad is annoying. To find out why this happens I talked to Amy Gorin, a registered dietician and owner of Plant-Based Eats

Why does sugar make you feel bad?

It's no secret that too much sugar is a bad idea for your health. Where things can get complicated is when you talk about different kinds of sugar, since not all sugar is created equal. Some people may say "sugar is sugar," which is true to an extent, but the sugar that you find in a natural whole food, like an apple, is a bit different than the sugar you find in a doughnut for example.

If sugar is regularly making you feel bad, Gorin says to start with considering what kind of sugar you're eating. "When it comes to sugar, there are two types: naturally occurring sugar and added sugars. Naturally occurring sugars are in foods like fruit, vegetables and dairy -- and these aren't the types of sugars you need to be super watchful of unless you have a condition like diabetes," says Gorin.

Added sugars are the ones that you find in desserts like cookies and cake, but they can even show up in surprising foods like baked beans and canned fruit. "These added sugars can give you a sugar spike of energy and then zap your energy after that spike. If you overconsume them in one sitting, you might not feel so great," explains Gorin. Another reason why sugar makes you feel crummy is because overeating it can cause inflammation in the body, according to Gorin. The way this works is what researchers say is via a process in the liver that creates free fatty acids, which can lead to inflammation, according to Medical News Today.

How you feel when you eat sugar isn't just about what type of sugar or how much you're eating though. Something else to keep in mind is what you're eating alongside the sugar. "[Sugar] definitely can [make you feel sick], especially if you eat something that's straight added sugar and that doesn't have any protein, fiber or fat to help balance out how quickly that sugar will have an effect on you," explains Gorin. Protein, fat and fiber are key nutrients to keeping your blood sugar balanced and can help even out the spiking effect that sugar has on your blood sugar.

"That's why if you were to go for a piece of candy, it's better to choose a Snickers bar, which contains that fiber, fat and protein versus say a Pixy Stix, which is straight sugar," explains Gorin.

Sugar is easy to go overboard on -- here's how to avoid the sugar hangover.

Getty Images

How to eat sugar and avoid 'sugar hangovers'

First, you should try to stay in the recommended range for daily intake of sugar, which is about 50 grams of added sugar per day. "You should aim to keep your added sugar intake at 10 percent or less of daily calories. For a 2,000-calorie daily diet that would be no more than 200 calories or 50 grams of added sugar per day," says Gorin.

"Besides keeping your daily total sugar intake at or below the 50 grams per day guidelines, you should also avoid eating lots of sugar in one sitting," she adds. "Spacing out the sugar you eat throughout the day will be easier on your body and blood sugar. Again, combining sugar with other foods that contain protein, fat, and or fiber will also help you feel more balanced."

Another tip from Gorin on reducing sugar intake and avoiding a sugar hangover is to make your own dessert at home. This way you can control exactly what goes in your food and there is no guessing about how much sugar you could be eating. "One of the easiest ways to reduce your intake of added sugars is to make your own desserts that don't contain any added sugars," says Gorin. "For instance, you can make a homemade 'nice cream' or even a chocolate pudding that doesn't contain any added sugars. These recipes are sweetened naturally with fruit," says Gorin.

When you want to avoid extra sugar, another tip is to use spices that taste naturally sweet to your food. "Spices like cinnamon and nutmeg are on the sweeter side and can add sweetness to drinks like coffee and foods like oatmeal," says Gorin.
