CARLINVILLE — Among the costs of a shortened six-game spring football schedule, it was assumed, would be personal milestones like a 1,000-yard rushing season.
Bobby Seal is ignoring the barriers.
The Carlinville senior running back continued to take on a heavy workload while leading the Cavaliers to a 37-13 victory over Springfield SHG’s junior varsity on Saturday afternoon on the artificial turf at Carlinville High School.
Seal rushed for 279 yards and five touchdowns on 44 carries – all career highs – to close within 80 yards of membership in Carlinville football’s 1,000-yard club. The 5-foot-9, 165-pounder will go after that number Friday when Roxana visits Carlinville in the season finale.
The Griffins JV, whose parent club is ranked 5-0 after Friday night’s 56-0 win over Springfield Lanphier and ranked No. 1 in the Class 5A state poll, still posed a threat to the Cavaliers at the half. But the Cavs extended their 10-7 halftime lead to 30-13 after three quarters pushed their record to 4-1.
Seal, who is averaging 35 carries a game, accounted for all of Carlinville’s TDs while pushing his season total to 14 after Lonny Rosentreter’s 23-yard field goal put the Cavs up 3-0 after one quarter. Carlinville quarterback Ayden Tiburzi completed 8 of 13 passes for 108 yards. The Cavaliers produced 442 yards offense.
SHG JV countered with 200 yards offense, with most of that coming from QB Ty Lott. He rushed 16 times for 81 yards and completed 10 of 22 passes for 108 yards. Ethan Trimm had nine tackles with 1.5 sacks to lead a Carlinville defense that got eight tackles from Chase Michaelis and seven from J.D. Byots, with Colton Robinson matching Trimm’s 1.5 quarterback sacks.
