Win over Italy helps England seal Six Nations title as Ireland lose in Paris - Yahoo Sports

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

England were crowned 2020 Guinness Six Nations champions on points difference after a conclusive victory over Italy propelled them beyond the reach of closest rivals France and Ireland.

Eddie Jones’ men overcame the rust that had set in after seven months of inactivity caused by the coronavirus pandemic to post a 34-5 win in Rome that placed them in a strong position to seize Wales’ crown.

Ireland’s destiny remained in their own hands, knowing a bonus-point triumph would be sufficient to deny England, but they fell short in a 35-27 loss at the Stade de France that concluded a dramatic Super Saturday.

It gives Jones the third Six Nations title of his five-year reign exactly a year after the 2019 World Cup final was lost to South Africa. Andy Farrell’s men finished third while a rejuvenated France were runners-up.

Having dismantled Italy, England returned to their team hotel to have dinner and watch events in Paris unfold knowing they were in the driving seat heading into the final element’.

There was already an air of celebration after Ben Youngs marked his 100th cap by crossing twice, a brilliant second try coming moments after the interval when Owen Farrell’s side looked for a response to a ragged and bad tempered first half.

Suffering from the cancellation of the Barbarians fixture that was to be their warm-up, they looked every bit a team that needed to blow away the cobwebs.

Italy fought hard but when Jamie George touched down on his 50th cap, any remote hopes of staging an upset faded and England registered the crucial bonus point when Tom Curry surged over from close range.

Henry Slade added the fifth and final try to set up an anxious wait for the outcome at the Stade de France.

Ben Youngs won his 100th cap (PA graphic)

All week they talked about the need to show patience in shaking off the rustiness of having not played since mid-March, but it took only four minutes to breach the home defence.

Mako Vunipola was the engineer, the Saracens prop standing at first receiver and sending Owen Farrell into a gap before Youngs appeared on his shoulder to finish the move.

Italy were in full retreat in every department and it took furious defence to keep out the white shirts, so it was a conservative decision when Farrell opted for three points when offered a penalty in front of the posts.

England pressed again but a fumble by Kyle Sinckler was pounced upon by centre Carlo Canna, who gathered and carried before a rampaging Jake Polledri arrived on an excellent line to storm over the whitewash.

Another setback came in the 23rd minute when Jonny Hill’s debut soured upon catching Edoardo Padovani on the head with an arm, forcing the Italian wing to undergo an HIA and earning the Chiefs double-winner a yellow card.

Jonny Hill, centre, is spoken to by referee Pascal Gauzere (Marco Lacobucci/PA)

Jones slammed down his radio device in anger at referee Pascal Gauzere’s decision and what followed would not have pleased the Australian head coach either.

Italy began to attack with tempo and made inroads, winning successive penalties which they cleverly used to build pressure.

A driving line-out took them over the whitewash but they were held up with Hill under the ball and they crumbled at the ensuing five-metre scrum, costing them a glorious chance.

Polledri entered the sin-bin for going in at the side but just as England began to hammer away from close range, they conceded a penalty to enable Italy to escape and even momentarily threaten at the other end.

An unimpressive 10-5 interval lead was extended 56 seconds into the second half when Hill charged down a box kick and Maro Itoje secured the loose ball.

Spotting a gap at the ruck, Youngs dummied and slid through the hole before beating full-back Matteo Minozzi.

With half an hour to go, daylight opened up as George finished a driving maul but Italy refused to fold as they continued to scrap.

Finally they began to buckle, Curry spotting an unguarded blindside to scamper over before Ben Earl and Slade took advantage of an absent Azzurri defence for the latter to complete the rout.

SEAL Team Six Executes Long Distance Rescue Operation Of Kidnapped American In Nigeria (Updated) - The Drive

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

U.S. special operations forces, including members of the U.S. Navy's elite SEAL Team Six, have rescued an American citizen, who was kidnapped just days ago in the northwest African country of Niger, in a raid in neighboring Nigeria. You can read more about what is known about the abduction of 27-year-old Philip Walton from his home in the Nigerien village of Massalata, less than five miles from the Nigerian border, on Oct. 26, in The War Zone's previous reporting on that incident. At the time, we had predicted that some type of special operations mission operation to rescue Mr. Walton could be imminent.

ABC News was first to report on the operation, which occurred at an as-yet-undisclosed location in Northern Nigeria and was conducted with cooperation from Nigerien and Nigerian authorities. The Pentagon has now confirmed that the rescue mission took place in the early hours of Oct. 31, 2020, and was successful, with Walton now safely in the care of the U.S. State Department.

"U.S. forces conducted a hostage rescue operation during the early hours of 31 October in Northern Nigeria to recover an American citizen held hostage by a group of armed men. This American citizen is safe and is now in the care of the U.S. State Department," Jonathan Hoffman, the Chief Pentagon Spokesperson, said in a statement. "No U.S. military personnel were injured during the operation. We appreciate the support of our international partners in conducting this operation."

The Pentagon statement did not say how many members of the armed group who kidnapped Walton had been killed or wounded, but ABC News's report said that all but one of the captors had died in the raid. The status of the remaining individual is unclear.

Details about the exact composition of the raiding force, beyond the inclusion of SEAL Team Six, are limited. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) provided intelligence about Walton's location and Marine Corps special operations units deployed in northwest Africa helped to determine where he was being held, according to ABC News.

The raid also included the extremely long-distance movement of forces via multiple C-17A Globemaster III transport aircraft flights and the employment of a quartet of both CV-22B Osprey tilt-rotors and MC-130 special operations transports, the latter of which pushed through Rota, Spain, before continuing to their target. AC-130 gunships and a large contingent of aerial refueling tankers also supported this operation.

The armed group who took Walton remains unidentified, but is said to have not been associated with any known terrorist groups in the region, pointing to some form of criminal enterprise. This would align with the initial reports about the circumstances of Walton's abduction. However, as ABC News noted, criminal groups in the region do have a history of selling foreign hostages to terrorist organizations.

Concern that the American national might find himself at the center of just such a transaction was reportedly the impetus for the operation. This region of northwest Africa is home to multiple factions aligned with both ISIS and Al Qaeda. One of these groups, Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), was responsible for the infamous ambush of U.S. and Nigerien forces outside the southwestern village of Tongo Tongo in 2017, which led to the death of four Americans and four Nigeriens.

Niger, where the U.S. military formally opened a new, large base last year, is a major hub for American counter-terrorism operations in the region, as a whole. Nigeria, which has been battling the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram, and now its splinter faction, the Islamic State's West Africa Province (ISWAP), for years now, has also been an important regional partner for the United States in combating terrorism in northwest Africa.

This is a developing story and The War Zone is already working to confirm additional details and we will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

Update:

@Aircraftspots spots, a master open-source plane tracker and radio interceptor, has more details about some of the aircraft that took part in the mission, telling The War Zone:

Update:

Here is the official statement from the White House:

It's also worth noting that some sources state that the SEALs parachuted into the area to initiate the rescue and then were flown out, presumably by the CV-22Bs.

Greek Orthodox Priest Wounded in Lyon, France, Shooting - The New York Times

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

PARIS — A Greek Orthodox priest was shot and wounded Saturday in the central French city of Lyon, but the motive was unclear, local authorities said.

The shooting comes at a time of heightened tensions in France, which is still on edge after a pair of recent attacks by Islamist extremists, the killing of three churchgoers in the southern city of Nice on Thursday and the beheading near Paris two weeks ago of a schoolteacher who had shown cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad during a civics class.

In Lyon, around 4 p.m. on Saturday, local residents and a police patrol heard two gunshots near a Greek Orthodox church in the 7th arrondissement of the city, the Lyon prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

Police officers saw a man fleeing the scene and found a priest with gunshot wounds near the church’s back door, the statement said. French media reported that the attacker used a sawed-off shotgun.

The police apprehended a person matching witness descriptions of the attacker later on Saturday, the prosecutor’s office said. A statement from the prosecutor’s office said that the person was not carrying a weapon and did not say that the person was a suspect in the shooting.

Grégory Doucet, the mayor of Lyon, said that the priest had been hospitalized with serious wounds.

“At this stage, no hypothesis is ruled out nor favored,” the prosecutor’s office said, adding that it had opened an investigation for attempted murder and that it was in touch with the national antiterrorism prosecutor’s office.

But the fact that the national antiterrorism prosecutor was not directly overseeing the case was a sign that authorities did not have evidence of a terrorist motive.

The Lyon prosecutor’s office did not provide more details about the assailant or the identity of the priest.

The police cordoned off the area, a residential neighborhood in Lyon, and local authorities asked residents to avoid it.

French authorities had placed the country on its highest terrorism alert level after the attack in Nice and had increased security patrols around key sites, including places of worship.

Jean Castex, the prime minister, told reporters on Saturday that “serious events” had occurred in Lyon but that he did not have any information on the circumstances.

Mr. Castex happened to be speaking from St-Étienne-du-Rouvray — a small town in Normandy where an 85-year-old priest was killed in 2016 in a terrorist attack that the Islamic State said it had carried out.

Mr. Castex, who was visiting the town to review heightened security at the church, said the French government was determined to ensure that all worshipers could practice their religion “in complete safety and with complete freedom.”

Liverpool seal late comeback win v. West Ham, go top - Yahoo Sports

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

Liverpool – West Ham was a tight, tense clash which the reigning champions edged thanks to a late winner from Diogo Jota.

[ MORE: How to watch PL in the USA ]

Boy, were they made to work hard for it.

West Ham took the lead through Pablo Fornals but Mohamed Salah equalized before the break and Jota struck late on.

Liverpool have now equalled their club-record unbeaten run at home in the league, as they’ve gone 63 games without defeat at Anfield. With Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Joel Matip out, their defense held firm with debutant Nathaniel Phillips shinning.

3 things we learned

1. Shaqiri, Jota stand tall: They changed the game when they jumped off the bench with 20 minutes to go, no doubt, and in terms of Shaqiri, it is wonderful to see him fit and in full flow. Jota has looked razor sharp since he arrived from Wolves and he’s now scored in three-straight games and is staking his claim for a starting spot. But where do you slot those two in? What we are seeing is Liverpool’s second string attackers looking sharper because they are playing regularly with the squad rotated due to European and PL action. Liverpool now have to figure out how to keep them sharp, as Firmino, Salah and Mane are almost undroppable but perhaps they can now be rested more often.

2. West Ham have gone full-Moyes: The Hammers were good value for a point but they didn’t get it. They ran out of steam in the second half and that was perhaps because Michail Antonio was out injured and couldn’t get them further up the pitch and his hold-up play was missed, as Liverpool kicked on late on. Still, a run of four unbeaten games before this promising display shows that the 5-4-1 formation is working well. They’ve gone full-Moyes.

3. Phillips a star; Gomez’s form a real concern: Nat Phillips was brilliant on his Premier League debut, heading clear on multiple occasions and a towering header in stoppage time to clear a corner summed up his display. The 23-year-old didn’t let anyone down and with Fabinho, Matip and Van Dijk out, Phillips staked his claim to be given an extended run in the team. The academy product who has spent most of his career with the reserve squad (and on loan at Stuttgart last season) was solid. Joe Gomez wasn’t, and this is a reoccurring theme, as his header straight to Fornals for West Ham’s goal summed up his recent displays. Error strewn. Klopp needs more from Gomez to shore Liverpool up defensively.

Man of the Match: Nat Phillips – What a debut from Phillips, who was chucked in at the deep end and swam. The center back did all of the simple things well and he’s worked so hard to get to this chance. He took it with both hands.

West Ham tested Liverpool center back Nat Phillips on his Premier League debut, as they whipped in a cross from the right after a quick free kick but Phillips headed clear.

Moments later there was nothing he could do about West Ham taking the lead. A cross from Arthur Masuaku was poorly cleared by Joe Gomez straight to Fornals and he controlled and fired home to give West Ham a surprise lead.

Jordan Henderson smashed a shot just wide after a rapid beak form Sadio Mane caused problems in the West Ham defense, then Andy Robertson volleyed over from the edge of the box as Liverpool built up a head of steam.

Salah won a penalty kick just before half time as Mauskau caught him in the box — Salah made sure everyone knew that with his reaction — and the Egyptian star slammed home down the middle to make it 1-1.

VIDEO: Premier League highlights ]

In the second half West Ham were a threat on the break as Masuaku crossed for Fornals but he stretched to get an effort on goal which Alisson saved.

Liverpool huffed and puffed as they tried to get a winner, while the Hammers always looked likely to cause problems as Andy Robertson blocked a shot from Fornals.

At the other end Robertson was denied by Lukasz Fabianski as the game opened up late on as Salah slashed a shot wide.

Liverpool thought they had gone 2-1 up late on as Jota surged forward after a break led by Xherdan Shaqiri and his cross to Mane saw the latter have a shot blocked, but Jota then finished… however referee Kevin Friend looked at the VAR monitor and judged that Mane fouled Fabianski after his initial save and the goal was ruled out.

Then the winner arrived thanks to Shaqiri setting up Jota, again, as the former slotted the ball though to the latter to finish, as Mane was stood in an offside position but didn’t interfere with play.

Klopp punched the air on the sidelines as despite all of their injury problems, Liverpool have gone back to the top of the table with a gritty win.

SEAL Team 6 rescues U.S. citizen Philip Walton in Nigeria - CBS News

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

U.S. forces have rescued an American hostage in northern Nigeria. Philip Walton, who was abducted by a criminal gang, was rescued by SEAL Team 6, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports. Officials had feared the gang would sell him to terrorists operating in the region.

"U.S. forces conducted a hostage rescue operation during the early hours of 31 October in Northern Nigeria to recover an American citizen held hostage by a group of armed men," Chief Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement Saturday. "This American citizen is safe and is now in the care of the U.S. Department of State."

The statement said no U.S military personnel were injured in the operation.

Walton, described by a defense official as an American farmer, was abducted in Niger earlier this week, Martin reports. He was then taken across the border to Nigeria, according to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The criminal gang that captured Walton was based in the small village of Niamey in southwestern Niger, Martin reported. They apparently intended to hold him hostage for a ransom.

Six captors were involved, and five were killed during Walton's rescue while one got away, according to a defense official.

A defense official said the raid was carried out with the cooperation and support of both Niger and Nigeria.

President Trump appeared to praise the rescue on Twitter Saturday morning. "Big win for our very elite U.S. Special Forces today. Details to follow!" the president tweeted

"The United States is committed to the safe return of all U.S. citizens taken captive," Pompeo said in a statement Saturday. "We delivered on that commitment late last night in Nigeria, where some of our bravest and most skilled warriors rescued a U.S. citizen after a group of armed men took him hostage across the border in Niger."

"Thanks to the extraordinary courage and capabilities of our military, the support of our intelligence professionals, and our diplomatic efforts, the hostage will be reunited with his family," Pompeo said.

Irritating bacteria found in Kona tidal areas - West Hawaii Today

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

The “Red Sea Moss” Lyngbya came to the Kona Coast this month, and it is best avoided.

It was the first noted in Keauhou Bay by Na Maka o Ke Kai Waterkeepers Dennis Mihalka. This so-called moss or algae is neither. It is cyanobacteria, Lyngbya majuscula. The bacterial cells string together to make long filaments. The filaments give rise to the appearance of an algae. This bacteria is found in the tropical Pacific waters from time to time. It is unique as it can fix nitrogen from the atmosphere and needs a phosphorus source to thrive, unlike typical marine algae or phytoplankton.

ADVERTISING

Blooms of lyngbya occur on the Kona Coast. A lyngbya bloom in the late summer of 2015 occurred at Kohanaiki. Some children playing in the shallows developed a skin rash. Some parents were concerned when children developed skin lesions under the waistband of the swimming suits. Before entering the swallow waters, scan the rocks for a brown-red fine grass like growth and avoid it. When the filaments break off and lodge under swimwear, modest toxins from the lyngbya can cause pronounced skin irritations.

Treatments include washing the skin well and adding soothing ointments like calamine and cortisone creams. If lyngbya exposure is to the eyes, rinse well with drinking water, and seek medical assistance. Wash and dry the swimsuits to avoid re-exposure. The best treatment is prevention. Learn to recognize lyngbya and avoid the tidal area where the red seagrass is present.

ADVERTISING

Seasonal episodic blooms of Lyngbya are known in Hawaii and elsewhere. The bacteria respond to warmer water temperature and the presence of nutrients, especially phosphates. Phosphates are known to contaminate groundwater that flows into the sea. Control over excessive phosphate in groundwater and the sea will come as sewage leaks and cesspool usage are resolved.

This is yet another sign of untoward human influence of the near coastal waters. Help support the mission of the Kona Coast Waterkeepers at https://ift.tt/3oTQqzw.

2000-year-old Gem Seal Depicting Greek God Apollo Found Under City Of David - GreekCityTimes.com

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

According to researchers, the tiny gem seal, the third ever found in Jerusalem from the Second Temple period, was likely the property of a Jew.

A 2,000-year-old gem seal bearing the portrait of the Greek god Apollo has been unearthed in soil removed from the foundation of Jerusalem’s Western Wall during the Tzurim Valley National Park sifting project, the City of David announced in a statement.

According to researchers, this is only the third such gem seal ever found in Jerusalem from the Second Temple period.

The gem is cut from dark brown jasper, considered a precious stone in antiquity, and has remnants of yellow-light, brown, and white layers. Oval-shaped, it is also extremely small, being half an inch in length, two-fifths of an inch wide and only about one-ninth of an inch thick.

Because the gem is an intaglio (that is, a gem with a design carved into its upward-facing side), its main function was the stamping of a seal on soft material, usually beeswax, for use as a personal signature. The gem features an engraving of Apollo’s head in profile to the left.

Shua Amorai-Stark, an expert on engraved gems, told the Jewish News Syndicate: ‘Among Apollo’s spheres of responsibility, it is likely that association with sun and light (as well as with logic, reason, prophecy and healing) fascinated some Jews, given that the element of light versus darkness was prominently present in Jewish worldview in those days.’

He also noted that the specific colours were not chosen by accident, but were likely used to highlight ‘the aspect of light in the god’s persona.’

Apollo is said to have been the most loved of all the Greek gods and stories say he was the son of Zeus and twin brother of Artemis.

The Archaeological Sifting Project at Tzurim Valley National Park, sponsored by the City of David and the Nature and National Parks Authority, is a large scale archeological project that offers the public an opportunity to experience and appreciate archeological activity without the need for advanced training or specialised knowledge. The project is closely supervised by archaeologists, and allows participants to become “archaeologists for a day” as they process material unearthed in City of David excavations.

Discoveries made by the project thus far include an imprint of King Hezekiah, coins from various periods, arrowheads and jewellery.

The 'Recipe' for Election Unrest Exists but So Do the Chances to Avoid It, Experts Say - Yahoo Entertainment

ragamnyakabar.blogspot.com

As Election Day draws closer, so too does the worry about what kind of anger and anxiety might be unleashed by the results of such a contentious campaign — one in which the president baselessly accused his opponents of fraud and suggested he may not accept defeat.

Days ahead of Tuesday's voting, various officials across the country say they are “prepared” to face civil unrest in cities and states next week.

Worry over whether the general election results could spark violent clashes at the local level (or whether such conflicts might spin into larger chaos) has led some stores to consider precautions after the country experienced a summer of social upheaval.

In one headline-grabbing move this week, Walmart announced and then reversed a decision to remove guns and ammunition from its sales floor ahead of the election, citing policies around past concerns of "civil unrest."

Political leaders are preparing as well.

Some state officials, CNN reported, began signaling worry and disappointment late last month after Donald Trump urged his supporters during the first presidential debate to "go into the polls and watch very carefully," arguing, without evidence, there would be some kind of voter fraud.

In Michigan, NPR reports officials have taken to the courts to try and block firearms from being allowed to be carried at polling places.

In California, Gov. Gavin Newsom told reporters the state was taking preventative measures in case of upheaval. And in Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Friday the city was “ready and prepared if we need to scale up." (But she made it clear the city had no indication of any specific problem.)

In some instances, global conflict experts are turning their attention stateside for the first time ever, as Americans wait for the results of the contest between President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden.

“In 25 years, I don’t think it ever dawned on us that we’d be writing about the United States,” Robert Malley, the president and CEO of the International Crisis Group, tells PEOPLE.

The global crisis watchdog group released its first-ever report on the U.S. this year, Malley says, after some of the protests touched off by the killing of George Floyd dissolved into violence and destruction involving the police and various groups.

Malley lists the boxes his team began checking off this year while studying the U.S., including: political polarization, a history of racial division, a deepening distrust of institutions, a polarized media, a proliferation of weapons and the existence of armed groups aligned with political views, a conviction on both sides that the only way to lose would be if the other side cheats and political leadership that is fanning the flames.

KEREM YUCEL/AFP via Getty Images Smoke rises near a demonstrator holding a sign and facing a row of police during a May 30 demonstration in Minneapolis after the death of George Floyd.

“Those are all recipes for things going off course,” Malley says, though he’s quick to point out the country has a lot of institutions that weigh in its favor, including an apolitical military and checks and balances, which he says don’t exist in many countries the group studies.

“The first thing is not to throw gasoline on the fire,” he says. “Unfortunately, that is the opposite of what we’re seeing [from U.S. leadership].”

Trump, trailing in most national and state polls and facing sharp public disapproval over his handling of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, has leaned on divisive rhetoric.

The president has repeatedly spread misinformation about the trustworthiness of the election, including baselessly claiming mail voting is fraudulent and arguing that ballot counting should end on Nov. 4.

And he has at times hesitated to denounce violent groups who support him.

During the first debate, he was asked to speak out against the far-right group The Proud Boys and instead said, "Stand back and stand by."

But, against a backdrop of these worries, some activists have increasingly stressed that people hold the power.

During a recent virtual joint conference between the The King Center and The Carter Center, Dr. Bernice King said the role of citizens is “not to add fuel to the fire, but to use our courageous voices” through nonviolent protests.

“We know people are going to protest. We might as well prepare for it,” King, the youngest daughter of the late Dr. Martin Luther King said. “People are very vested in this election ... and tempers are probably going to flare after it’s over, but we don’t want to be that log on the fire."

“Somebody’s going to lose" and "we have to accept that," King said, pointing to her father's famous "I Have a Dream" speech and his legacy of advocating for nonviolent protest: "We want to be those who respond, as my father said, on the high plane of dignity and discipline."

SEAL BEACH, CA — A woman was killed Thursday evening after being struck by multiple vehicles while possibly walking on a Seal Beach road, according to authorities.

Officers were called at about 6:30 p.m. to the Adolfo Lopez Drive and Seal Beach Boulevard area where the female was found unresponsive, the Seal Beach Police Department said.

Police began lifesaving efforts, and the victim was taken to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries, officials said.

Investigators from the Serious Traffic Accident Response (STAR) Team believe the pedestrian was walking in northbound lanes of traffic when she was hit, police said.

The drivers involved in the accident were uninjured and remained at the scene.

Anyone with information on the case can contact Traffic Investigator Officer Cory Montgomery at (562) 799-4100 ext. 1623 or cmontgomery@sealbeachca.gov.
