Jim Jones, previously assistant administrator at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Edward Hubbard Jr., general counsel for the Renewable Fuels Association, have been elected to Green Seal’s Board of Directors, effective immediately.

“Jim Jones has an unmatched record when it comes to accelerating the shift toward safer consumer and facility care products,” said Green Seal CEO Doug Gatlin. “He is a champion for innovative, market-based environmental solutions, and we could not be more pleased that Jim has joined Green Seal’s Board.

“Ed Hubbard brings tremendous policy expertise in renewable fuels and clean energy, as well as in international trade. We are delighted to have Ed join Green Seal’s Board, where his entrepreneurial approach to environmental policy will be a crucial asset.”

Jones is president of JJonesEnvironmental, a consulting firm that provides strategic advice to clients on issues related to chemical safety. As assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention, a Senate-confirmed position, he was responsible for implementing the nation’s pesticide, toxic substances, and pollution prevention laws from 2013 to 2017. Jones’s many accomplishments over his 30-year career at EPA included launching the Safer Choice ecolabel; helping to overhaul the badly outdated Toxic Substances Control Act and establishing federal “Green Guidelines” to facilitate federal purchasing of sustainable products.

From 2017 until January, Jones was executive vice president of strategic alliances & industry relations at the Household and Commercial Products Association, where he focused on strengthening the association’s relationships with industry, NGOs, retailers and government while increasing sustainability efforts in the specialty chemicals industry.

Jones earned an M.A. in Economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a B.A. in Economics from the University of Maryland. He is a 2003 recipient of the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Service and a 2010 recipient of the Presidential Rank Award for Distinguished Service.

“It’s an honor to be part of the Green Seal team. As one of the first ecolabels, Green Seal’s credibility and robust standards have been a model for ecolabels around the world for decades,” Jones said. “I look forward to working with the Green Seal Board to further Green Seal’s reach in harnessing purchasing power to enhance environmental sustainability.”

Hubbard has been general counsel for the Renewable Fuels Association since 2011, where he steers the international public policy agenda and promotes a policy framework that advocates greater production and use of the renewable fuel. Previously, he served in the office of U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), and as legislative director and counsel to U.S. Representative Albert Wynn (D-Md.), advising on issues related to energy, commerce, small business and wireless. Hubbard was appointed by Mayor Muriel Bowser to the inaugural Board of Directors of the DC Green Bank, an innovative policy tool designed to use public funds and private investment to expand renewable energy, reduce emissions, create green jobs and improve sustainability in Washington, D.C.

“I am truly honored to be chosen to join the Green Seal’s Board of Directors,” Hubbard said. “I am excited about the opportunity to help continue the important work that Green Seal has been doing to help our nation and our communities transition to a more safe, clean, and sustainable economy.”

Hubbard formerly was an associate at the law offices of Willoughy & Associates and at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP, working on issues including business, real estate, labor, civil rights and securities and regulatory compliance. He earned a J.D. from Howard University in Washington, D.C. and holds a B.A. in political science from the University of California at Los Angeles.
